Need Help Major Tranny Problem

hey everybody-

I've got a serious transmisson problem with my 89' n/a FC. I was backing out of a parking-lot spot. I went to put in the brake and clutch to put it into 1st, but the car stayed in reverse. I was quite confused, and backed into a rock (just a scratch, thank goodness) Now the car won't move at all on it's own. You physically move the gear-shift into 1st, 2nd and neutral, but it will not go to 4th, 5th or reverse, and when you try to drive it in 1st, it doesn't go anywhere. Meanwhile the back-up lights are constantly on (stuck in reverse, maybe?) Anyway, I had to have the car towed back to my house, but I'd really like to know what's wrong with it, and how hard it will be/how much it will cost to fix. I know I'm going to have to take it to a shop because transmission work is beyond me, but I'd really like to know the problem I'm dealing with. ANY HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED! thanks

yea man it could be your syncrhos take the tranny out your self disconnect all the sensor etc and just take the tranny to a local tranny shop of your choice ask them to check out the synchros.

Does the shifter feel sloppy at all?

I was teaching my friend to drive a stick on my old Jetta once, and he tore apart alot of stuff shifting it too hard.

It was really sloppy, wouldnt go into reverse, and i could only get 2nd and 4th gear.

But i drove it home like that

Its cheap stuff to fix, cost me like $3 for a piece of shift linkage that he tore.

I dunno about how the shifter works on the RX7 tho... i'd assume its set up different since the shifter sits pretty much above the tranny. try taking off the boot and looking at wtf is going on in there when u shift. Could be a simple fix.

A broken syncro can jam a gear so it acts engaged when the selector is in neutral.
But you say 4 & 5 are locked out.
That tells me inside the tranny is actually in R, and the interlock pin is doing it's job.

The trick is pulling the internal reverse selector rod back to neutral.
Try pushing the lever to the right past 4/5 & force it further to the right & back by springing the linkage, to get the lever into reverse.
Then pull it back to neutral.

Thanks everybody for your replies... I fixed the problem! Took the entire tranny/drivetrain apart to discover that nothing was wrong. My guess is that the little stick that the shifter moves between gears. Well, everythings back in now, car works, and the whole ordeal only cost me $65 and a day of my time. (cash was for towing and to have a machine shop take out a bolt I broke) Again, thanks for everybodys advice.

If you have the same problem I did I don't think you will have to remove the transmission to fix it... you should be able to access the area from the car...in the shifter area.

Wait... no thats wrong I'm sorry.... You WILL have to drop the tranny out if you have the same exact problem as me beacause you will have to push the little stick/leaver thing (dont know real name) back into position (I recomend neutral). Hope you can fix it good luck.

the only thing you can access from the shifter area is the hole where the ball of the shifter goes. and that area pretty much is nowhere near the syncros. gotta take the transmission out man

I feel for ya... it's deffinetly a good solid full-day of work, assuming you run into a minimal amount of snags. And I hope you've been hittin' the gym...cause that tranny is friggin heavy. I actually got hit in the head with the drivetrain and nearly lost consiousness.... i guess there's always a tranny hoist. But the one i used wouldnt fit. like i said before, good luck.
