Need Help With Engine Choice!!!
Hey guys. Well i have a 1986 Rx7. All i know is that the Engine in it right now is a 13b non turbo. I am also new to the whole rotary engines, so if you could inform me on whats a great way for a new engine wether itd be gettin another 13b engine and adding a turbo if possible, or gettin a different engine or whatever. Please give me your best input =] as i am gonna do an engine swap soon but dont know what to do.
Also if you know a place where i could buy the engine in southern california that would be great to!
Thanks guys!!!
-Kenny

if youre doing a swap go strait to a turbo motor, dont try and make an N/A into a turbo. for an 86 it would be the S4 Turbo II motor, that will be the most power stock and will be much more fun then an N/A... if you had the money i'd say go 20B TT but i dunno how much you're thinking about putting into it

You need to answer a few questions first:
1. how much power do you want to make
2. how much money do you want to spend
3. do you have to deal with emissions inspections
4. purpose of the car

If you want to stay rotary generally what people say is that you should swap over from a Turbo II car or buy a Turbo II if you want to go turbo.

hahah the dark side...i wish man lol
kk to answer some question i am tryin to stay reasonable with price so id like to say a grand but then again i have no idea how much these engines run or whatever.
also the purpose of the car is just for me to have fun with however i would like it to have power since i was thinking of a bolt on turbo, but like you said a turbo II engine might be the better way to go.
so how much would it be for the s4 turbo II engine estimately? also does it just drop right in to my 86 or will there need to be special fabrication done to fit correctly?

the TII engine is a direct bolt in. i would strongly reccomend a TII trans and differential. with that you would need the driveshaft from a TII as well. you will need a TII engine wiring harness or a megasquirt. it would be more time saving and cost effective to go and purchase a TII over the swap.

if its gona be that much trouble or work to swap the s4 turbo then i think i might as well stick with a non turbo. any suggestions for that?
also a price estimate if i were to buy a rebuilt 13b. also whats the difference between a 13b and a 13b six port?

there are many kinds of 13b's. there are the 13b 6 ports (non turbo models) and the rest are all 4 ports.
a turbo2 engine isnt that hard to install. get an s4 turbo engine. complete for the better. get the transmission, and then get the special drive shaft from mazdatrix that allows you to make a t2 tranny with a non turbo rear end.
then what you need from the turbo model is the clutch slave cylendar, the turbo pressure sensor, the turbo airflow meter, and the turbo ECU.
you will also want the fuel pump from a turbo model as well, or just go ahead and get a walbro 255 pump and drop that sucker in.
go buy a jdm engine. send it off to get rebuilt ( its a good idea to do this because they tend to be 50% DAO. send the injectors off to witch hunter performance to get cleaned.
rip the engine apart to the bare block, and send that off. when it comes back, ditch the rats nest( there a writeup) and plug everything in.
if you want to to upgrade your exhaust beyond a catback, you'll need to send out your turbo to BNR so that he can modify it to enlarge the waste gate as you'll boost spike and then... kerplow. dead engine.
also get a t2 hood. so you can use the top mount.
thats pretty much it.

thanks for all of your input and help. i think from everything ive heard i may just stick with a n/a 13b and just add a cold air and some other little parts, and in the future buy a turbo rx7 to mess around with.
However, do any of you know where i can get a rebuilt 13b engine in southern California that is guaranteed to work?

thats what i originally wanted to do and it looks like i just might do that. my dad is a mechanic by trade and has been working on cars since the age of 14 so i know he could rebuild it and help me if i wanted to. and plus i think it would be really fun to do so since i would be learning about the engine and it would be my first rebuild
