need help on ecu upgrade

I have a chip to upgrade my ecu but am not sure which one it needs to replace. There are two chips the same size as the new one I need to put in, one near the edge of the board and one in front of that one closer to the middle of the board. Does anyone know which one the upgraded chip replaces?

you can't just pull the chip out, it needs to be desolded and it's pretty hard, if you don't know what you are doing don't try unless you have another ecu handy.

Whoops. Forgot to mention that it's an '89 TII.

I'm actually already past that. Got it all desoldered and soldered in an IC socket so it's now plug and play. Only problem is that as soon as I put everything back together, the check light came on and the car drove like ****. Exremely rich at idle and when I saw any boost, leaned out big time like fuel was cut. I put the stock chip back in and it ran just like it did before I started this. I'm either thinking bad chip, which would suck, or I replaced the wrong one since there are two that are the same size. I replace the chip closer to the middle of the board and am wondering if it should've been the one near the edge of the board. Thanks for the timely response though.

It should be the 16 pin dip chip on the front of hte flip out daughter board. If you were to remove the screws and flip out the ribbon-attached board, it would be the one on the top side of the non-attached side. The OEM chip should say something like xxxxxx-1052. 1052 is the OEM program. If that's the one you repalced then there are two possibilities:

1. bad chip or not for your car.
2. it was programmed for something totally different than your current mods.

Good luck,
Jay

Ah, thank you. I'll pull it back out and look. The one I tried replacing was before the one on the top, a Toshiba chip. The other one above that, at the edge of the board had a black sticker on it with numbers which is the one I think you're referring to. Thanks again.
