need help on buying a 2nd gen

i have a '93 R1 right now...and REALLY REALLY want a 2nd gen. but i don't know too much about their reliability. i know the question of how many miles a 3rd gen can go before rebuild gets OLD FAST and i am sure it is the same here, but please post on what you guys have picked up to be about the average miles a second gen N/A will go before a rebuild. there is a white 90 gxl right down the street from me for sale. it has 140,000 on the stock engine and has been pampered. the car looks brand new. he wants $3000 for it...is this good? my 3rd gen is about to blow...too many mods and too many miles. and right now it is up on stands getting worked on in my garage. i NEED a "reliable" car. by this i mean one that the engine doesn't blow. i don't care about other stuff such as suspension, clutch...blah blah blah...i just car about how far this engine can go...and yes i KNOW how to take care of an rx-7 very well..so it will continue to be pampered. so just what is the average milage the N/A can go? please be honest...i know on our 3rd gen section people are embarrassed and will say the 3rd gen can go way beyond 100k...well, it isn't true.

thanks,
mike

You have got to be ******* kidding me!!!!!

You have a 3rd gen and want a NON TURBO 2nd gen?

Christ, if you want something reliable get a ******* Honda or Subaru. 200,000 easy.

Obviosly you cant maintain an RX7. They ARE reliable.

Let me guess, you thrash it while its cold, and then shut it off immediately when you stop.

Oh yeah, a 90 N/A with 140,000 for $3000 is a **** poor deal.

Man he didn't ask to be hated on, he wanted info.

Well it all really depends on how well it is maintained. There was someone on here that posted 300k miles and still going on the original engine not too long ago. If it has been mechanically taken care of very well it will prolly go 180k or so. If the car wasn't taken care of real well mechanically I would not get it. $3000 for a great condition S5 NA isn't bad at all. Oh, by the way, the S4 NAs tend to be the most reliable.

bob13bt: buddy i don't know what is wrong with you. my rx-7 is perfect. i want a second car. i have done everything to my car myself and KNOW what i am doing and how the car works. it puts your little list of mods to shame. you have no reason to post like that without knowing stuff first. right now my car is up on jacks due to a minor accident. my engine is 100% perfect. i know my crap...and for people like you...i hope you NEVER get the experiance of owning a 3rd gen or a car like it (or even get to drive one). i love my car and will never in my life sell it. i am looking at getting this second car for me...a car that isn't a race car. please keep your ignorant mouth shut and don't waste my time or other people that might have the same question.

Ryde _Or_Die: thank you very much! that is all i was asking.

Wink Ooooooooooooooooo!

Hahahahaha... You tell 'em boys (or men.... maybe you'll get offended). Anyhow, I swear it feels so good to know that there are other people out there who go through the same stupid crap with their RX-7s, but still LOVE THEM!!! No one but a TRUE RX owner would know... I guess. Anyhow, in response to your question, I think if it has been as well maintained as you say, I would think it would make it to 200K easily since you will keep pampering it. I bought an immaculately maintained 86 GXL a couple of years ago. Anytime it needed anything, from an oil change to a new clutch it was taken to a dealership (in VA.... NOT THE ONE HERE IN BOSSIER CITY LA... They suck). (Really bad). The only reason I don't have that one is because it got flooded from a hurricane. (May she R.I.P). I wish you the best of luck if you decide to buy it! $3000 sounds great! Yeah, it has 140K, but rotaries were built to work hard with TLC. Good luck and God Bless!
