need help asap!!! How to hook up starter wiring.

okay i jus got a second new rebuilt starter...does the big hot wire from the battery connect on the right or left terminal thing on the starter...over the ground wire?....or does it go ground left and hot(positive) right....the only reason im asking is because i thought that i did it wrong over the weekend and fried my brand new starter so i took it back and said it was defective..now im thinking it wasnt...i had the big wire over the ground on the left side...but in theory that doesnt sound right....can someone please jus tell me how it hooks correctly?

thanks... i did search but i have 3 wires which is confusing me i thought there was a ground.....anyway didnt help jus installed the starter again and nothing...iluvmyrx7.com is great but it doesnt exactly tell me if i have the starter removed and i hook it up directly to the battery will the gear on the solenoid coninually move....this is why i thought the last one was defective because it would jus move out and would not spin...now this new one is doing the exact same thing...is it possible i keep getting defective ones or is it supposed to be doin that?

Theres two parts to the starter... well, theres the solenoid too, but for physical movements, theres two.

The rod needs to push the starter gear forward twoards the flexplate, and the motor needs to spin the gear to turn the flywheel. If one or the other doesn't work, the starter is whack.

Take it to an auto store and have it professionaly tested (doesnt cost anything generaly) and find out.

I was confused after I swapped my tranny out wtf was going on. Wires were installed right, starter worked before the swap...

Turned out that I had remembered dropping the starter from about 8" or so. Didn't think anything of it, wasn't a hard hit.

Ended up havign to get a new starter.

Worked fne after that.

If you have the starter out of the car, try this:
1- Hook up battery jumper cables to your battery. The positive from the battery to the large copper stud on the solenoid which has no wire attached to it.
2- Connect the negative of your battery to the bare aluminum part of the starter - (The area around where the bolt holes to attach it to the engine.)
3- Nothing should have happened yet. Now, take a sturdy screwdriver and use it to momentarily connect the large stud you have connected to the positive side of the battery, to the SMALL terminal on the solenoid. (The one that's above and between the two large studs.) This will/should make the solenoid engage, kick out the gear, and spin the starter motor.
4- If it spins, the solenoid and starter are good. If it doesn't spin, disconnect the positive jumper cable from the starter. Next, you are going to connect it to the OTHER large stud on the starter, the one with the little 4-inch long wire (about as thick as a pencil) which disappears into the starter motor, already connected to it.
When you touch the positive jumper to that stud, the starter should immediately spin. The gear may or may not kick out, but the motor should turn. If it doesn't, the motor itself is bad.
5- When doing any of the above, BE SURE NOT TO LET THE POSITIVE CABLE TOUCH ANY PART OF THE STARTER OR SOLENOID BODIES.

Well its not a starter. Sounds like you've got your timing way out of wack (which coincidentaly, will create hella shitty starting)

Messed up timing will get that cat to glow and cause starting problems
