Exclamation Need Help Asap

I just bought an 86 RX-7 GXL, 5spd. The guy I bought it from said he has been having to pop the clutch to get it to start (maybe a starter problem) and the reason why he sold it was because the last time he tried popping the clutch the rear tires locked up. What can this be???

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Define 'popping' the clutch a little better, are you talking about pushing it and letting go of the clutch in gear?

Well, he could've either put it in the wrong gear, or the engines seized up, or he had some shitty tires. Stick a 19mm socket on the front pulley bolt and see if you can turn it over with the car in neutral, if you can't, well that's bad news.

What do you mean the rear tires locked up, if the car wasn't running that makes seen, Or do you mean that he has been having to bump start it.

Get a 19mm socket & wrench, put it on the main pulley, and try to turn it clockwise, if it turn's you're in good condition and you just should pickup a starter or something. If it won't turn, then you have a serious problem. Forget the whole push start thing for a moment and go try that.

Nope, right below it. It's the one nearest the ground.

At least carbon is a little more forgiving than an apex seal....

Possible carbon locked. Do a search for "Carbon lock" or "Carbon Locked"

Your motor is carbon locked, and you need to fnd a way to get it to move. Some people use the ATF treatment, allthough it doers leave quite a bit of carbon deposits and isn't the greatest thing for your motor. But if you can't get it to run any other way then I'd say try ATF. You can search for ATF Treatment and you should find quite a bit of info.

Agreed, you should've checked that all over before buying it, but you can do as was mentioned above, soak it in ATF and hope for the best, however unlikely it is, you're probably looking at a new engine soon. Don't suppose you have any terms with the previous owner? Sounds like you're pretty much sol.
