need help =\ Just bought 87 TII and it has problems

Last night i bought an 87 Rx7 Turbo II.. The guy said the fuel pump had just been replaced and the mechanics that did it told him the car was strong... When i drove it it stalled out (i had the clutch in) but it would idle and then fall below 1k and die.... It was ruff riding but when it got going it got goin smooth. (after about 4k) It had a little sputter and a little pop...It didnt seem too fast brfore 4k... Someone suggested spark plug and someone else suggested something as opening the intake and that why it died (dont remeber exactly someone on this forum...) Well i drove it around today to get used to it and i was going about 60 everything was fine and i turned in wal-mart and it sounded deep and had no power...... more pops... it would barley even go from a stop.. i managed to putt my way home. It is now ruff and shakes the car... I dont know anything about rotary engines in a piston engine if this happened i would say some kind bottom end problem and the motor would be useless (basically) PLEASE TELL ME MY NEW (to me) RX7 isnt F!@%#* up..... I'm taking it to a mechanic monday any thing i should suggest for him??? Also how much should a rebuild run me? or hopefully not a new motor? and where can i get them? any rebuild kits out there? IF i need to...

these cars are VERY sensitive to vacuum leaks. They get really pissed and run awful. You need to check the turbo inlet duct and make sure it has not cracks and is on tight. You need to check for vacuum leaks around the intake manifold. Theres a number of places where the lines get brittle and break or have popped off. Its kinda hard to pinpoint exactly where you probably might be, it could be a combination of things. Just go through it, be thorough when check vacuum leaks.

Sounds like also you could be about to loose a apex seal or already have. Check the inlet duct, if thats not the cause, might be internal seal of motor going by by.

Rx7supra,

Hey welcome to the forum. Since I don't know what the previous owner's maintenance was then I'd recommend getting this done ASAP:

Full tuneup/60K services (plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, fuel injector cleaning, etc..)

After that if it idles rought get a new TPS (throttle position sensor).

That made my TII 1000% better.

Also check for air leaks in the intake piping & manifold.

After it's running good, I'd recommend getting a new pulsation dampener as the higher mileage ones tend to leak gas.

Hope this helps

Also, check your regional rx-7 club. They should have a list of rotary mechanics if you get stuck diagnosing something.

I think fc3s.org has the service manual online as well.
