I bet you have never drifted. Ever.

Do something worthwhile and restore the car. Replace everything and do a lot of replacing stock equipment with stock equipment. You will gain a better understanding of the car and will respect the car enough NOT to drift it. I'm trying not to be rude but you really really need to learn a lot about cars if you actually want to be into cars. I know a lot of people who are "car guys" who have no idea what they are talking about. Put down the Super Street or Compact Tuning and Underwater Engine Building or whatever kids read these days.

You have to actually learn how to drive before you can MaD tYtE dOrIfTo!
100% agreement on the bashing part. sometimes posting about drifting is more trouble than its worth, although i did get alot of help in the first gen forum when asking about building a drift FB. when i first started working on my RX-7 all i really knew was vaguely how a rotary engine worked, not i can take apart half an FC in a day given i ran into few problems. these are cars that make you learn how to work on a car. my only problem is now im in school learning about piston engines because i dont know alot about them. and for stock RX drift reference

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pg5vUDAVnkk thats me in march of 06 i had just started drifting in feb. and had just got my rust bucket of a 7 in oct. little bit of understeer and not alot of angle, but i was new at it.

+1 for not trying to be rude though. dont see alot of that when talking about drifting.

Alright people:

1. Lay off the ******* kid, remember when you were young and you really wanted to get into something new and exciting? Yes some of us did do research about whatever it was and others acted off of impulse just going with it. The trials and tribulations we go through all vary on many different levels. You learn from those mistakes OR acomplishments.

2. Drifting in my opinion is TRACK only play and really is something people become interested in because they have spent enough time on the track or strip going quick and straight. I do get very upset when I see the younger crowd acting like morons, endangering the lives of innocent people. Movies and ignorance have keep that **** on the streets for a long time, even before the import scene. However we all own 7's, some fast some REALLY fast and we are all GUILTY of acting like a idiot once in a while so we have no right to lecture this young man.

3. If he wants a 7 at that age let him do it, even though he wants to drift that doesn't mean he isn't capable of becoming a good do -it -yourself mechanic. Hopefully he learns the proper way to do mechanical work on the car and retains it so he can use the knowledge in the future. I got my 7 at 19 BUT my cousin owned it when he was 16 and rebuilt the motor, did all the body work and painted it as well. Look at my pic below, that is the work he did at 16 so age isn't an argument here, its determination and doing it RIGHT the first time. I too knew nothing about cars period when I got my 7 and now from these years of being frustrated, happy, confused and freaked out I know quite a bit about the rotary and general engine mechanics and maintenance.

4. Last but not least we all are stupid no matter how smart we think we are until we are old *****. With age comes wisdom..............some faster then others though.

Let's all put our infinite wisdom to use and lead this guy through his life.

Or..

Let's let him do what he wants to do and treat him like a human being (aka, when he asks what he should do to set his car up for drifting, give him honest advice and not a lecture?) instead of pulling the condescending act.

I'm a teenager. And, although I have a deficiency of testosterone, I know that when someone significantly older than me talks down to me, I instinctively ignore them. So.. riding on the assumption that this guy is no less rebellious than I, telling him that he shouldn't pursue this passion is just going to make him more passionate in the attempt to prove everyone wrong.
/rant

My advice: don't do jack **** to the car. Just drive it until it breaks. You'll be mad when you dump a few grand into the car for no reason when you total it your first time "drifting." Putting performance parts on a car doesn't make it invincible, especially when you're doing something dangerous like drifting.

If you're not over 30, you should all STFU...someone else used this acronym.
Yes, this is going to sound like fatherly advice.
To think you know everything at that young of an age is just plain stupidity.
You will not have the same mentality 10 years down the road.

HOW MANY OF YOU "KIDS" HAVE SEEN A PERSON DIE.
That makes you grow up (usually) very quick, and you tend to rearrange your priorities at the same time.
If you think having a cool car and being able to slide if something you NEED to do, you are just plain stupid.
So it might get you laid...
So it might get everything else to think you are cool...
You know what...it doesn't do jack to get you ahead in life.

Now, if you're that good, and you're some protege, then why the **** are you listening to a bunch of bitches from an online forum?
The good ones will always attain their goals.
The question is...are you one of these one in a million naturals?

I, personally, don't think so.

+1 on that. i dumped at least 1400 on my first 7 and then i blew the engine just driving to my girlfriends house in a normal not fast matter. luckily, i had an S5 i was working on and was able to make a bit of money and transfer a few parts to my S5.

also, your cousins car is by far one of the nicest turbo S4s i've ever seen. very clean and i love the color and the rims. and the front mount

lol... I doubt that you get "A"s and "B"s... The "run-on" sentences are more than enough evidence to display that either you are lying about your scholarly ability, or the FCAT has just gotten really easy. However, that is only my perception from my brief skimming of your hollow writ.... j/k...

Anyway, on a serious note... I got my first car when I was 16... but I didnt have parents nor any "parental figures" to help me make any good decisions. That being said... I ran that turbo probe (yes it was a probe) ragged. Anyway, if you want a fast car, just be safe and dont do anything stupid... And I would suggest going to driving school so you can learn your limits in a safe place... keep the learning off the streets...

Agreed that not all teenagers are stupid. But, they ARE ignorant...and that's NOT a put down. That being said, we don't know this kid. Most likely he is the same as any other stupid teenage guy (I'm not talking about book smarts here) and will go out and do stupid **** in his car that will endanger his life AND the lives of his freinds AND anyone else in the vicinity. The reason we fear for the kid is because he came on the forum and some of the first words he said are:

...i'm 14 and i just bought my first car......i'm ready to start tuning it and setting it up for drifting...
There aren't many ppl here who are going to feel comfortable telling a kid who has no driving experience how to set up his first car for what will LIKELY be reckless driving done in the presence of other drivers and/or pedestrians. I don't feel like contributing to the endangerment of a minor today. Learn how to drive first, then learn how to drive crazy.

honestly...I don't think it's so much a matter of maturity or "knowledge" but rather experience. most of the time, someone twice your age is going to have more experience than you...whether it be in life, driving, auto mechanics, or whatever.

You really don't need to be so concerned with drifting @ 14 when you don't even have your license yet. You should concentrate on maintaining the car and keeping it running stock and learn to drive it normally..and once you have a few years of driving experience, start practicing drifting...that is, if you're still into it 3 yrs down the road. One of the worst things you can do automotive wise is make dumb, impulse decisions. And i'm not trying to lecture, i'm just trying to give advice

Believe it or not, some people are able to do good in school AND "waste their time" on cars.

High school is a BREEZE. I got out with a good GPA, got accepted to the college I wanted to go to, and didn't do a damn bit of work. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to brag. This situation is true for almost everyone I know.

I've learned a lot about myself from working on my 7. I've done ALOT more work on that than most things in my life. However, I've learned that if I work hard enough on something, I CAN do it. When I bought my car, the only thing I knew how to do was put gas in it. Now, I can do everything short of a rebuild. I only can't do that because I don't have the tools/time. I still "waste my time" on my car and I'm going to be graduating from college in December.

With that said, I'm not advocating that he shouldn't be doing the work necessary to get good grades in high school. School comes first and foremost if you want to easily get ahead in this world. I'm merely pointing out that some people can do good in school and have a hobby. And by some people, I mean 99%. Working on a 7 is a hobby/extra curricular activity just like football, band, soccer, bla bla bla. Ya know, the things MOST high schoolers do.

Damn u all are stuburn.....4 of my uncles are mechanics and another owns a body shop. I was talking to my History teacher and he runs a restoration shop near my neighborhood and they'd all say they'd help me and teach me how to work on the car and to understand how everything works. I've ordered the drift bible dvd and have watched it a million times...i know that means nothing according to you all but i've already started trying some of the techniques on my go-kart. and i'd never dream of drifting on public streets i never said that and u all just assumed that that was my plan. I've also signed up for drivers ed class for next year when i turn 15......i'm doing all that i can geez.....and Just because i'm 14 doesn't mean i'm a total idiot

wow..you're absolutely right

suspension:
full bushing kit
good coilovers [msrp of new ones will run $1200+]
strut/sway bars
upgraded brakes

drivetrain:
t2 or better lsd
upgraded driveshaft
t2 tranny
upgraded clutch & flywheel
hell...just do the whole t2 swap

go out and find a parking lot...then screw up the $1200 suspension when you curb it b/c of the whole 5 months driving experience you have.

you're only 14...you have PLENTY of time to tune the car and drift it....what's the rush??

Congrats on the car man! You should consider how much you are willing to spend on your FC. Also, you need to figure out what needs to be replaced/repaired before you go and upgrade/modify anything.

Welcome to the club man
