How can I tell the difference between a 86-88 and 89-92 non turbo engine with the engine in the car?

S5 (89-91) should have a place for knock sensor on rotor housing above trailing plug

 

not on a non turbo

 

sorry, i never owned an N/A Rx, thought it was the same.

 

Also the manifolds look entirely different. The part that says 13b Injection has 2 round pipes extending outward from it on the 89-91. Also the plenum has a valve and actuator called vdi (looks like a short chubby version of the 5/6 port actuator) that sits right under the TB. Im pretty sure there is also a different in spacing of the spark plug holes but I am far from sure so dont go by that.
