Need advice on S4 TII

Hey all!

Well I had just got back from looking at a 1987 TII, and a need alittle adivce, let me describe the condtion to you...

It has a clear title, from the 3rd owner with 72K and some change on the clock.

Exterior:
It has a few imperfection in the body, couple of dents and scrathes but nothing to bad, Bascially it will prolly neeed completly repainted.

Interior:
It needs a small pieces from the center column of the passenger side floor, rear carpet that covers the passenger shock tower, and the storage bin support, There is also a crack on the top of the center console. Other than that the interior is EXCELLENT!

Engine:
Sounds like the throw out bearing is going, but the tranny is smooth as is the clutch. I compression tested the engine and both front and rear read about 80-85 psi, basically from my understanding its on it way out. My question is, is the compression lower in the S4 TII than a S5 TII or S4/S5 NA or should the numbers still be the same for all rotaries, ie 90 psi and up good, lower bad?

Also how long does it take to warm up from idle, it started out at 1800rpms then went up to 2K after 2 minutes and stayed there forever, well until we hit the road. Oh and what rpm should max boost be hit? It was about 4000 maybe give or take a few.

Well thats about it, the guy wants $2800 for it, what do you all think? Is it worth it, or should I walk?

A couple more things, it needs a gear forn the sunroof to open/close and the passenger power window switch doen't work, but the two on the drives side is fine. The antenna does go up or down.

It did smoke alittle at start up, but it was getting dark and it was hard to tell what color it was. It cranked over fairly easy, we had to change the battery becasue it was dead.

4000 is a little high to be getting full boost. Did you look at the twin scroll? Might be wired open.

And the idle should come down as soon as the temps are normal. It can take 2 mins to come down, and it could take longer.

It was defiantly idling for atleast 5 minutes maybe more, beacsue we had to move a few cars.

I didn't think to look at the twin scroll, and didn't have everything to hook up a boost gauge

sounds alot like mine did when i got it (88TII)

EXCEPT

my clock had a 188,000 on it....

the interior is good almost great minus the norms..
idiot lights being screwy, missing one of the triangle defrost vents..small stuff.....the leather interior is in great condition though...

the engine was a diff story...

somebody apparently cut the wastegate hose, so god knows what i was boosting at....

anyway, it had a bad fuel leak which i got fixed, but a few months later it blew....

im about 700 bucks away from driving it again....
be sure to do a FULL tune-up
that will help ALOT

It really depends how rare TIIs are around you. Around here they are rare, and I got mine for $1300. Perfect in and out pretty much. Everything worked. All it needed was a radiator and water pump and it was good to go. Alot of mods and boost later and its seeing 100psi evenly on the rear rotor and 80s on the front(getting rebuilt now and ported). Moral of the story, there are deals out there but you might have to wait. How many TIIs have you seen for sale locally? I doubt many. If you have the money you could get it and rebuild it immediately or try and use some ATF to restore some compression. Shouldn't get a TII anyways if your not prepared to spend some money.

$2800 might be high if the throw out bearing is going...I would take another look & drive...If it was night you should really check her out in the day light...Take your time and drive it alot before making a offer...Is the exhaust orig.? How were the tires? brakes? Any service history? How did the oil look & smell? (Gas smell?) How did the coolant look? Many things to give you clues to the shape its in and the value of the car...Any leaks? A/C work? Lots of things....

Good luck/skill!

The T2's can be one of the best true sports car values...anywhere!

I would definately try and talk him down. I bought my car for quite a bit cheaper and it just had a rebuild on it with mods. Just find the things that a wrong on it and point them out to the guy and quote him a price on how much it will cost to fix, look for rust etc. Just get that price down so you can have extra money to fix it up.

Thanks for the help!

Well I had just got off the phone with the guy and he said he is firm on the price.

What is the est life I am looking at with having 80-85 psi on the engine? And what happens when the compression drops? I heard ATF might help repostion the seals and raise the compression is that true?

It has a RB turbo back exhaust, HKS FCD and as Blitz BOV. He said it just had a tune up, all the fluids looked clean, wasn't able to look at the tranny or diff though. But I assume they are aswell.

How much difference is compression would there be if the gas pedal was not floored? Would it be higher or lower? Becaus I am not sure if he did that, cause he was all worried about flooding the engine, but I told himit would be fine.. anyways lmk!

If he has a rb turboback system I think he should also have an upgraded fuel pump which you didnt mention. Use all the little things wrong with the car to talk down the price.
