Nasty old radiator

Just pulled the (stock?) rad out of my '87 base model. I'm no expert but that's just nasty.

The Koyo is going in as soon as I can bend the brackets the right way.

Well I surf this forum for a living, so I can tell you as a professional forum reader that yes, that is a nasty radiator.

Even for a non-pro forum reader, I can tell you...that radiator is straight skanky.

You know, I didn't think to take any pics while I was installing it... which is odd because usually do. I'm pretty confident I did an *** job of installing this new rad. The brackets are messed up and the bolts that go into the frame barely thread... and the fan shroud is bending like hell. Oh well, when it breaks I'll get an e-fan.

I couldn't really get an accurate measurement on the dimensions of the Koyo with it in the car, but it seems to be about a CM thicker and the same width and height as the stock rad. As mentioned previously, the fan shroud didn't go quietly. (But it clears the c-fan.) I guestimate the coolant capacity to be about 6 or 7 quarts. 50/50 water and anti-freeze with 5 oz of Water Wetter.

For my test run, after letting the car idle while checking for leaks (about 10 min) my bro and I took the scenic (and deserted) route to the local taco shop and hauled *** getting there. It was about 10 pm at about 60' outside. My stock temp guage got to about 1/8 and stayed there. The Dakota Digital temp gauge is in the mail.

For anyone wondering why I put a Koyo rad in a N/A S4, I was having heating problems, and it was bugging me. 3/4 on the stock guage in stop and go traffic on a 85' day. I figured it was a worthwhile investment.

Ummmm,,,, Wow.... We've put several koyo's in s4 and s5 FC's... Only problem i ever ran into was that I had to weedle out the holes on the stock brackets to bolt it to the koyo rad..... It was one of the older gen Koyo Radiators, I think mayber the kid bought the wrong series rad..

NOW... the FAN SHROUD.... You need to take a dremel and CUT the plastic around the top tube on the radiator.. just enough so that it doesn't pinch under the top tube..... thats what's making the fan shroud bend!!!!!! The Koyo's tank is a bit thinker and the top tube is welded on and a bit lower than the stocker, it causes the lip on the fan shroud to pinch there.

This aslo has the effect of making the shroud a LOT easier to get on!!

Anyway.. the Koyo tanks are not that much thicker, but take a look at the core... its a LOT thicker than the stock rad!!!!

Job done. I've been a bit busy since I installed the Koyo, so this week was the first chance I got to fix the shroud. (A month and 8 days.) Rather than remove the fan shroud, I got lazy and unbolted it from the mounting brackets and cut the plastic fan shroud with some tin snips. Not the prettiest cut ever, but it gets the job done. (And no mess.)

I know nobody gives a ****, but should someone search and find this they won't miss the "mod the fan shroud" step like I did.
