NA to turbo conversion (who is using which driveshaft?)

Good Day!

I know this has been covered like a million times! I was wondering who did the NA to Turbo conversion and left the NA rearend. If you have a Turbo II transmission and the NA rearend which driveshaft did you end up using?

I know there is some debate whether you can use the Auto drive shaft: Anybody using it? Any problems?

I have heard you can use the Turbo II driveshaft if you get the holes slotted or redrilled for the NA flange size. Anybody using this method? Any Problems?

Lastly, a hybrid driveshaft. Anybody using one? Where did you get it and for how much? Does it work well?

I am aware that you can get one from Mazdatrix for this exact reason, but like everybody else, I am a cheap bastard!

Thanks!

Rob

The mazdatrix adapter is the only realistic way to use the na drivetrain with the turbo transmission. If you dont want to buy the part altogether, you can just bolt your na transmission to your turbo engine.

I covered this in a previous post not long ago but here's a quick rundown... You can use a Auto Drive shaft cause it has the same yolk as a turbo shaft and the same flange as a NA rear end. The problem is it is about an inch too short. It will go right in but you'll have only about 1 in of driveshaft on the trans splines. What I did on one of my cars is put a custom spacer plate on the rear end that gives you the extra inch so it will be fine. You can make a temporary spacer by getting grade 8+ bolts and washers and a very big washer(s) for the center of the flange that keeps it centered. I put a little more detail in the other post reply, try searching for it An easy way is to just get the Mazdatrix custom shaft for about 280. If you know a good drive shaft shop you can take a turbo shaft and a NA shaft and have them swap the ends on them (thats if you have both) I did and did that on one of my cars too. I liked it better cause it had the turbo strength and the NA flange. I think it may be better than Mazdatrix's ...

If you have access to a blown turbo rear end, or can get one, you can just swap the hub off the pinion gear from the turbo rear end onto the n/a rear end on the car. then use a stock turbo drive shaft.

pretty simple.

I ran a auto driveshaft for TII trans to NA rear end with no problems at all for a long time with NO MODIFICATION, all that **** about spacers, washers, bolts is BS and not needed. I wanted to made sure it was strong so I buned the hell out on the tires, took turns as fast as I could and it held up with no problems. You will see when you install it there is just the slightest amount of play, but there is NO WAY its slipping out or grinding.

Good luck!

thats funny, because i can go over to my buddys house and look at a 87 gxl with a stock six port motor with turbo tranny and drive shaft. not to mention i was there when he swapped the hubs over. car runs fine.
