NA to JDM Tii swap - wiring question

I've read all the relevant write-ups and they've been very helpful.

One thing that hasnt been clear is what is the right way to wire up the turbo duty solenoid and the knock sensor.

I have the JDM wiring harness so I have the right connectors. I see two logical options:

Option 1

Do you cut the connectors off and solder/shrink tube new wires and run those all the way along the wiring harness to the ECU, and then pull out the original pins and solder on the new wires?

If you do this do you wrap the new wires onto the old harness with new loom tape?

Option 2

Or do you splice the wires to the existing wires somewhere along the harness? if so, where?

Thanks!

Jim

why dont you use an a-spec wiring harness? have you considered using a megasquirt?

I dont know what an a-spec is. This - like most car projects - has kinda spun out of control on cost and effort. So my plan is get the N370 pieces in and run it like that. When RTek comes out with their version for the S5 we'll probably get that. I dont feel like going all out with standalones and FMICs and the like. A pretty, reliable driver with some umph is the goal.

What EM harness is being used in the car? A US-spec NA harness? Or the J-spec TII harness? I'm going to assume you just mean you have the jspec to canibalize the connectors.

The S5 NA vs. TII ECU pin outs differ only at these 2 points:

2M: NA - VDI Solenoid, Turbo - Knock Sensor

3R: NA - 6PI Solenoid, Turbo - Turbo duty Solenoid

So, since both the 6PI and VDI plugs would supply 12V power and a ground to those systems on an NA, why not just plug the 6PI connector into the turbo duty solenoid? Then the VDI's wires can be connected to the knock sensor, since it just needs constant 12V power. There's no external knock box on an S5, so you can just use the existing 2 wires from the ECU to the sensor itself.

Everything's already lined up properly on the TII's ECU pins, so why not make your job that much easier?

Hmmmm... Maybe I was over complicating it, 88. Maybe a whole lot!

I'm using the USDM NA harness. As you saw in my other posts, the car is running fine on all USDM NA electronics and sensors.

I dont remember what the colors are but we have two unused plugs right now for which there are no solenoids. That would be I'm guessing the 6PI and the VDI plugs. Figuring out which is which will probably be annoying as the FSM doesn't seem to refer to the colors in Section 4a. Maybe in the wiring addendum. I'll have to look.

So, if I read your post correctly, I can simply find the 6PI Solenoid plug and it will plug straight onto the Turbo Duty Solenoid plug, no fuss, no bother?

And then for the Knock Sensor I'll have to tap into the VDI plug and run new wires to the Knock Sensor plug on my JDM harness. And since as you note it is only looking for 12v, that should be very easy and straightforward.

Wow, that's going to be a lot easier than I thought! With all the discussion about pins and that I thought I had to modify the ECU plug!

Thanks, 88!
