My turbo 6 port is up and running!

Well, after about a month of working on weekends to get my car done, it finally fired up at about 2:30 this morning. Piping was a nightmare on the car trying to work the 6 port actuators into the mix, but it worked :-D. Hopefully I'll be able to start tuning it early on next week. I'll try to get some pics and sound clips posted.

I used a custom manifold for the exhaust, it needs to be reworked though, cause as of now, it's kind of crappy :/. as for the actuators, they are boost controlled, and so is the vdi. I'd never seen anyone run a setup like that before, so I was curious to see how that would affect turbo spool up/torque curve/peak power. As for the rest of the setup, I'm using 4x550's 255lph walbro pump, 38mm tial external wastegate, 2.5" exhaust, and a 1g DSM intercooler/BOV (they're cheap and quality), and a SAFC-II to control fuel.

sounds like a nice setup. Definetly keep us posted and when it's tuned get that thing on the dyno, I want to see how the 6pi and the vdi effect the power. What are you running for a turbo?

The turbo is an older IHI that my friend had on his Capri XR-2 (try not to laugh). He rebuilt it, and then shortly after wrecked the car. I bought it for 50 bucks. Also note that I'm not really shooting for maximum power, I'm trying to set the car up for the upcoming auto-x season, so spool time was more important.

No frame cutting, just some cutting around the rad support to fit intercooler pipe.

Here's a pic of the passenger side of the engine bay. I'll try to get a few more next time I get to work on the car.

The reason nobody keeps the aux ports or vdi is that they pretty much serve no purpose. Your turbo may spool about 100rpm sooner with the aux ports, VDI had no effect at all (though, the aux actuators do hinder top-end). This is why we toss em!

Dyno proven, ricer kiddie approved!

hehe, yea, scary scary welds for the BOV, but hey, i dont have a TIG, and the only thing my dad had was flux core MIG wire. I made sure to seal it up with liberal amounts of permatex. seriously, i swear that after all the permatex i've used on this project, i should just buy stock in the company :/

I imagine there will be better low end with the functional 6pi and vdi.

It'll make cruise/under 2k a hair better with the aux functioning, as for adding low end torque it made such a little difference it's negative effect on high end didn't warrant keeping it. VDI did nothing at all regardless of how we timed it's opening (and just for clarification incase anybody reads the above wrong, VDI has nothing to do with low-end)

just curious what has everyone else done? just take the VDI out? or do you have to switch manifolds?

The norm is to swap to T2 manifolds. They have shorter, wider runners. Meant for better top end (where you want the power in a turbo car...in the boost part of the band)

That or went with a manifold setup actually designed for the 6ports, and boost.

nice throttle body adapter... ok i am lying it looks horrible!

why didnt you just use the NA one and get a reducer?

edit: also... 6ports and VDI? arent those *only* there to make the most out of a *non-boost* rotary application? the 6pi thing could be interesting, but i think the VDI trying to do its job is going to cause airflow problems...

interesting project... i'm curious as to what it will do on the dyno...
