My transmission, it makes noise...
I bought my 1990 Vert from my boss, and friend, in January. Ran good, looked well taken care of, good compression numbers, just needed a new OMP.
The trans was rebuilt by a local shop here in texas 3yrs ago, and has about 13,000 miles on it. The car sat parked for 2yrs.
I had the trans fluid replaced in february.
Ever since then, fifth gear will sometimes sound like a power steering unit which is low on fluid. 5th always had a high pitched whine, so probably a bearing.
Now the noise like a low PS pump happens sometimes. If there is no noise, and I let off the gas with the clutch still engaged and then hit the gas again, the noise may or may not happen. Doing the same thing described above can cure the noise. Example: I let off gas to decel and leave clutch engaged. Hit gas and noise occurs. I can let off the gas and hit the gas again and that will usually make it go away.
No other gear makes noise.
Oh and I had synthetic 75w-90 put in.
I have been researching this topic since it started and could never find an answer so I am finally posting up.

Maybe a mount is loose I was thinking, and when letting off and hitting the gas again could be shifting the trans, putting pressure on the rear bearing and output shaft. I can't check tommorow but thursday.
If anyone has any ideas, any help would be greatly appreciated.

There is a retainer spring/snap ring on 5th gear that stops the gear from moving horizontally. Maybe that was not reinstalled during the rebuild? That's just a guess, though. I don't build transmissions, I break them.

Who knows. The reason the trans was rebuilt was because the reverse idler got stuck. As far as I know, the clutch, pressure plate, syncros and such where replaced.
Do you think my trans is going to self destruct with this issue?

That sounds pretty odd. If it were a bearing noise it would be a sort of roaring sound that occurs all the time. If it were a bad mount you would prolly hear a "clunk" when going from decel to accel rapidly. The fact that it only happens in fifth might point to something else. If your just coasting at highway speed does it go away?

Nope. This is how it works.
Shift into fifth gear, noise may or may not occur. If it does, I can let off the gas and hit the gas again and it will usually go away. Sometimes after it going away and I let off the throttle, then hit the throttle again it will come back. It can then be fixed by removing throttle and reapplying.
If I don't do the method described above, and let the noise continue, the more throttle I give, the louder it gets. It literally sounds like a power steering pump low on fluid.

I am going to wait on the rebuild. For one, I don't have the means to get the trans out of my car at home and two, I am broke for the moment. am hoping to do the entire drive train including the engine late this year/early next year all at once.
