Sports had AL hoods, so yours has been replaced at some point.

That's a good point. Any hood can be put on any car, so it doesn't matter what it came with, what matters is what's on there now.

86 sport in my yard right now has the original steel hood.(afaict) still has factory emissions stickers on it. So once again : no rhyme or reason!

Here is a quick guess as to why the reason for aluminum or steel hoods.
Could be maybe because of the options on the car, the manufacture trying to keep the weight ratio as even as possible, used aluminum on some optioned cars and steel on others to keep the weight from front to back as close as possible.

Just a guess but a good one IMO.

ive had probably 6 t2 hoods and they have all been aluminum.
