My speedometer isn't working
My speedometer isn't working
How hard is it to change the speedo cable? I had one mechanic tell me he already messed around with it, but the gear in the tranny needs fixed caue it's tearing up the gear on the cable. Anoher mechanic cais I have to drop the tranny to get to it. anyone know for sure? Thanks
you can unsrew it out of the tranny without taking the tranny out. It just twists right out. the hard part would be connecting it to the speedometer and getting the instrument cluster in and out without breaking any thing.

This is all new info to me. I assumed there was a gear on each side, or at least a gear on the tranny side. But in any case, I have a gear here that they said they took off of the cable. It's abou 3/4" tall and an inch total outer diameter with square teeth that are slightly angled. It has about a 3/8" diameter metal piece going through it that snapped off (looks like it snapped from twisting). I assumed this piece came from the tranny side, especially since there was a gear oil on it. Any ideas if this is even a piece of the speedo cable? Also, they said they changed that gear, and the speedo still doesn't work, but under acceleration, it'll read about 5-10 mph, so it must be connected everywhere, but slipping or something. Thanks for the info guys.
what car is this? my 86 GXL had a gear on the trans end of the speedo cable, and the metal pin that went into the back of the speedometer.
in a fit of frustration, i forced the gear end in the tranny with a 4lb hammer, in turn, ******* the neoprene teeth up and rendering my speedometer worthless. heh, dont flame me, i got it from my friends already..
but anyway, mine had a gear..

That's what I'm talking about... the gear that goes INTO the tranny is good now, but the gear in the tranny that spins the one on the cable isn't. I'm assuming Ihave to drop the tranny to get to the gear INSIDE the tranny? Makes sene, but I'm really trying to avoid dropping it. Thanks again for the help
yah ur gonna hafta.. i swapped the end shaft housing from the GXL's broken tranny onto my 82 12A tranny so itd bolt, and with that housing removed is the only way ur gonna get to that gear. not too difficult, a days work i'd guess.
