my recent bargains

First, I will be getting a sweet low mileage 89 n/a s5 in Feb with a blown motor. For this I scored a complete s5 engine and transmission package for $200.00.

The ironic thing is, I got the motor 1 1/2 years ago waiting for just such a deal.

Now that the deal is committed, I have lots of time to go shopping for more for the car.

Soooo, by watching Kijiji (like craigslist) I scored some 17" rims off a 87 fc for the new baby. Two of them are great, 1 has a little curb rash and the other has a small dent which "may" need repair. (you can see it at the 3 o'clock position in the pic). The tires were all absolute trash.

price: "FREEBIE"

Watching Kijiji today I was quick to pounce on a set of 215/45zr17 tires that showed up. Two are perfect with over 60% tread remaining! The other two are at about 50% with some shoulder wear from excess camber, good enough to burn up on the rear for the first season though.

price negotiated: ONLY 60 BUCKS!

I had a day off during the week so I decided to make one of my regular visits to the local pick n pull.

Yeah!! Another score...

I promptly spotted a 88 fc that was burned out and after a thorough treasure search of the remains found and removed a racingbeat cat replacement pipe and presilencer. All I have to do to use it on my S5 is block off the back pressure tube. And we have no emissions testing here, so bye bye cats!!

I have 2 dogs and prefer them over cats anyway.....

price....... $26.00 ( a $400.00 value up here)

Here are a few iphone pics of the car, she is still in the owners storage until she returns to Canada to finalize the deal. The car is rust free however the paint has some terrible sun fade and will need countless hours of polishing to restore.

Any suggestions on what else to do with the car are welcome. This will be my first second gen. The intention is to keep it original as possible, no TII swap, and have it as a nice daily driver.

My suggestions are to re solder any circuit boards that account for electrical things not working: clock, warning lights, door open reminder, etc. I had a blast chasing tiny, almost pointless problems like such in my FC. Looks good, such a score man!! Mine was free, so I know the giddyness you're experiencing =)

I suggest a master tune up, fix anything that doesnt work, replace broken pieces, do reliable mods, and lastly a paint job. Great thing about N/A's is that they are reliable if you treat it right.

Nice finds! P.S the wheels on the car are pimpin. I'd rock them

This is a black fb I flipped a few years ago. 20+ year old original black faded paint and oxidized clear coat.

After 3rd round of wet sanding progressing from 1500-2500 grit

Very nice fine, congratulations. Whatever you do, don't throw the wheels away. Some collector of odd and curious RX-7 stuff will want them. You couldn't get the steel 15" stockers in the U.S., though a few early S4 base cars did have 14" steelies. I've only ever seen the 15"ers in photos of original JDM cars.

The 15's have a nice set of winters on them so I'll be keeping them for sure.

I don't like those 17's... at all. I'd say don't buy em, rock the 15's for a while, til you can find a nice used set of some staggered, proper fitting wheels. Just my opinion.

Yeah, because they're ugly. Fact.

Also, because those stock wheels are a"rare" item in the us opinions if them are higher than they would be I'm a place where they are standard fair...but make no mistake, those 17's are wack regardless. They belong on a dodge caravan, stealth or neon They don't fit your vision of "mostly original" either.

Kudos on the deals though! Look on the bright side, the 17's are worth more in scrap than what u pos paid

Biggest problem with the 17"s is that they're really dated. Very late 1990s. I don't really hate them, but I wouldn't invest any money in refinishing them or anything.
