My rebuild lacks power, idles high and makes the turbo glow

88 TII. Hello, I've been posting about this for a while now and I still can't figure out what's going on. I have the yellow mark consistantly aligned with the pointer during timing, so I'm sure my timing is good now. However, while the engine idles smoother than before, it is still somewhat rough and idles rather high, around 1500 rpms. The biggest problem I have is that when I put the engine under load, like starting to move in first gear, the engine hesitates and want's to stall. It seems like if I get the rpms over 2500 it has no problem starting to move, but under that it has crap for power. Could my tps need adjusted or maybe the bac valve? Also, once warmed up the engine runs a little on the hot side (between 1/2 and 3/4 on the stock temp gauge). One more thing, my turbo glows a fairly bright orange/red. Before I started the rebuild the turbo had a lot of fuel kaked on it from my flooded engine, so could this just be unburnt fuel burning in the turbo? Or, is it from something else like the exhaust gases being too hot. Thanks.

Just throwing this out there, but when I put my rebuild in, I somehow managed to mismatch the injector plugs. I put the primary plugs on the secondaries and vice versa. I don't know what the hell I was thinking. Anyways, it would fire up and idle fairly smooth at around 1500 rpm. Stepping on the gas would want to kill it until I managed to get the rpm's up around 2500 or so like you described.

Turbo glowing is a sign of too much ignition retard. Check your timing.

the high idle could be from a vac leak i just finished my rebuild an i still cant find my leak. does it have a slight miss at idle and go away at cruse
check for vac leaks

To answer all of your questions - I wouldn't think my injector pluggs would be switched because I had them labeled, plus the wires have become so molded over the years that I couldn't see mixing them up. Rebuild is brand new, as in I haven't even driven it yet. All I have done is idled it in my garage. I'm not sure what else I can do with timing because I've got the yellow mark in perfect sinc with the timing gun. One point to consider though is that I had a hard time setting the timing. I couldn't set it how the fsm described, which was to line up the yellow mark and the marks on the cas then drop it in. I had to line up the red mark instead in order to get the yellow mark to line up during timing. A retarded timing setting would make the engine idle lower, right? Mine idles high. Yeah there could be a vac leak. Any leaks in particular that you think would cause these specific problems? Usually when I have a vac leak the engine just stalls.

Could be you have a leaking injector or maybe running on 1 rotor....

no way I'm only running on one rotor. When you say leaking injector, you mean leaking past the o-rings or leaking into the engine?

perhaps a vac leak making you run lean? that'll cause your turbo to glow, and would account for the high idle

Well I guess I'll have to take off the throttle body and look around for vac leaks.

Glowing turbo means there is fuel burning in the turbine housings, and since you said your timing is on, then it sounds a rotor is not getting spark, gas doesn't get burned and goes into your turbo.. Verify with a timing light that both rotors are getting L spark...

Well, you will never guess my stupid mistake. I had the lower spark plug wires mixed up with eachother and the upper spark plug wires mixed up with each other. I could tell right away when I started it that that was the problem. HOWEVER, now I have a new problem. The engine will start and fire right up to 2000 rpms, but then dies right away. Like it is getting a burst of fuel and then no fuel at all. So what could cause this situation?
