Once the car is working, a search for "basic modifications" would be a good place to start.

cool man, welcome to the club. FC's are great cars and you'll love it.
Like previously mentioned, I'd start with a full tune up and check up, make sure your not leaking fluids, fresh vaccum hoses and fuel injector grommets are great, check the voltage to the fuel pump to make sure your getting uninterrupted fuel flow.
is it turbo or NA? If it has a LSD it mught be worth having that rebuilt or sourcing a fresher one if it worn out. Just build it back to good condition before you start modding it, otherwise it will just be lack luster.

i bet you werent kidding... my last 3 paychecks have gone to my 7 :P had to replace my whole driveline... but its my fault anyway... and i only make a couple hundred a paycheck...
Anyway, Welcome to the club. My 7 has been a bit of a money pit but i love it. but if you take good care of it, it will return the favor... and as previously mentioned, make sure you give it a nice tune up and make sure its running right. then modify it. I for one neglected to do a proper tune up (which it needed) and now its biting me in the a$$...
