My Engine is hot :(
My Engine is hot :(
Hey everyone, I was driving along with my 88 Gtu, when my little "add coolent" buzzer goes off. I thaught this was odd, since i had just put more coolent in it the other day.
So I pulled off. Coolent looked fine, I added a quart of oil since it was a bit low anyway (but not too low).
The engine seemed to be smoking from the drivers side near the firewall, didnt dig into it and see exactly from where. I didnt let it get too hot, it just started smoking before i turned the car off. I found a ride home, so it's parked in a parkinglot right now.
My best guess is that i need a new thermostat, but i could be wrong. Is there a specific kind that i need to get, what do you guys use?
What else could be wrong? I have no smoking from the tailpipe, so my engine is still good
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure the smoking was not steam coming from the left side? There is a one dia water hose that comes out of the block just aft of the oil dipstick and runs to the firewall . This hose gets oil droped on it and sorta rots away at the engine connection. To be a touch more accurate its located about six inches below the oil filter. Check it out. If not at the block look at the other end going to the firewall. Its a heater hose.
Thanks, Ill check that out. I know what hose you are talkin about...btw, Left side from what perspective? When you are sitting in the car, left side, or facing the engine from the front, right side?
I got my car home!!! so it's safe in my garage

Ok I just experienced this similar Add Coolant (overheating) problem last week and here's what I did to get the car fixed.
1. Changed the thermostat and flushed the radiator at the same time.
2. Changed the fan clutch.
One more thing you should check - If you let the car cool down then check the coolant by openning the cap, I am pretty sure it will be low. Also, check the coolant reservior, that's where the missing coolant get dump. Mine got overflowed.
Hope this helps..
I spent some time observing the fan, it seems to be working normally. What im going to do is replace the thermostat and the heater hose on the driver's side.
When you say open the radiator, what should i be looking for?
Also, what's the best way to flush the coolant? What precautions should i take when replacing the thermostat/hose so i dont screw anything up?
Thanks for your help.

The radiator does not have a cap on it, but if you follow the hose from the radiator to the engine this a little cap that you can open to check for to see if your coolant is low.
Checking the fan is deciving since it always spinning, but can you feel any air blowing? If not, then you need a fan clutch. Another way of checking to see if the fan clutch working or not is; with the engin shut off, have a second person stick a piece of wood holding the fan, then start up the engine, if the you don't feel any force from the fan that means the fan clutch is gone. The part cost around $200.00 and you can do it yourself since there's only 4 bolts holding it.
Regarding to flushing of the radiator ,I usually bring it to a shop to do this.
Regarding to the thermostat, there's just a couple of bolts holding it. But be sure to check which side the thermostat sits when taking it out so you can put it back the same way.
I checked all my lines and stuff today, one of my heater hoses (the one under the oil filter) was completely ripped open. I also bought a new thermostat, so that's my project for tonight.
Thanks for all your help guys, I appreciate it.
