is my engine dead?
Hey guys, I'm pretty sure my engine is caput, but I figured why not just ask u guys. Basically, I just bought the car about a month ago with 205,632 on the odometer... When I test drove it, it felt a bit weak, but not severe. I took it under my wing, put about $700 into it to fix up the exhaust, and other vairous things. Anyway, I had somehow flooded the engine, and used the little trick of taking out the egi fuse and cranking it and all of that, and eventually unflooded it and got it running. So now I can start it, but it's very very weak, in fact, it likes to just die. Now, I am pretty low on gas, and was wondering if that could be an issue... twice the car died on me and made this very loud beeping noise just before doing so... what was that? Also, if it does indeed need an new engine, can I just do a re-build, or do I need to find a whole new engine? and how much does stuff like that cost? And one other thing, when I managed to get it running, I had to put it into first and floor it just to get up a hill that had a very slight grade. Oh, and if it's in neutral and I rev it up to about 5000 rpm, and then just get off the gas, it goes to 200 and starts to idle there sometimes, and sometimes it just goes down and shuts off... so what do u guys think, should I start saving my money for a rebuild or new engine or what?
depends on internal damage if you can rebuild using the orignal parts. otherwise you can rebuild it and buy maybe 1 rotor and a new housing for it and put it back together.
how do you mean weak? check the compression. fill up your gas. hows the fuel lines / filter? inspect the air intake system. check how strong your spark is. make sure your lead coil is working, and make sure it has a solid ground. how are your spark plugs? when was the last oil change? any cooling problems? your coolant level dropped recently?

Rebuilds:

Always do a compression check before buying a rotary. Sorry if that info comes too late.
Sounds like she's toasted, but you won't know for sure unless you do the compression test...

!?!??!
um.. can anyone elaborate on this?
i have a switch on the fuel pump relay, to prevent flooding.
so ive been running the car, then turning off the fuel pump and letting it run itself out of fuel, rather than just keying off to prevent any chance of a flood..
is this damaging my injectors? i read this relay switch mod a few times on this forum, and it seemed to be recommended..
No, it's not bad for the injectors. What I'm saying is if you run out of gas, your injectors will still keep pumping in gasoline, and that's when trouble starts. If you cut the relay to the injectors, you're basically just cutting the fuel flow, which is a common way to stop the car if the ignition is stuck. Happened to me before with my cutlass... the key cylinder got stuck and I couldnt' turn the car off, so I yoinked out the fuel pump and injector fuses. Doesn't hurt the car, you should be fine.

I agree with Black13B. Check everything out everything that could cause a loss of power before believeing that your engine if cooked. If you dont have a lot of smoke, loosing radiator fluid or hear some grinding it may not be the engine. Could be, but it's worth the checks first.

Or potentially save yourself a whole lotta time that may be wasted by doing a compression test now. Get someone to help you and in 5 minutes you'll know whether or not the motor is dead...
To update this one: It turned out the problem was that one of his leading spark plug wires was broken. Figures, its the only one I didn't check when I was making sure they were connected right. I still don't understand how that would make the secondaries not fire but.... Anyhow that problem is fixed, but I'm pretty sure he has the early stages of BCS. No geyser or bubbles, but it's instantly overpressurizing the coolant system, just like mine did.

crap
crap, it seems as if it actually DIDN'T fix the secondary's, so there is still something wrong there... grrrr. AND my breaks are messed up (smoking today after a 5 min drive) so it seems I still have a lot of work to do...
