My engine bay repainting thread

I will update periodically throughout the process.
This is the beast. 1988 gxl with a 1991 engine.

the engine bay is just unacceptable. This was my first car and as such I did a lot of learning on it. poor wiring poor installations, you name it.

I have a pile of goodies that will be going on the motor and a lot of work to do on the harness. It will get deloomed unnecessary wires will be removed and then it will be rerouted to make the car cleaner overall.

so its time to drain everything and pull the block.
Ill work on taking smaller pics too.

Excited to see how this goes. What "goodies" do you have? And how do you plan on cleaning up your wiring?

Since this point weve cleaned off the overspray on the block. painted the intake manifolds, ive removed unnessesary wires from the engine bay lighting harness and reloomed it. Weve also beun cleaning all the brackets too.

the cars actually back together and running. on the test drive the upper radiator hose popped off due to a crappy clamp. Aside from that its great. Ill get the rest of the images up soon.
the motor got the gilmer set, a new water pump, a new alternator, a new radiator. new plugs, villager fan, new fuel filter, new clutch master, new slave, new throw out bearing, new brake master, repaired bodey panels, and repaired wiring. An expensive project, but a massive difference in the end.

Why did you fit a gilmer pulley set on a stock engine?

Also where did you get your injector service kit from?

I got the gilmers because I personally like the style. the dual pully set I was running had streaching issues no 2 belts were ever the same length for more than a few miles. the gilmer sets a little loud but aside from that its fantastic.
the injector service kit came from here

Very nice effort.
Is that RTV on the UIM gasket?

yea its a new gasket but after 20 years and multiple mountings and gasket removals ive learned that a little rtv doesnt hurt.

it shouldnt have taken so long but I needed to have the header tapped for a o2 sensor (stripped threads) the waterpump housing tapped for a sensor, and the water pump pully boss pulled out 1/8" so the gilmer pulley wouldnt rub.

I'm a great fan of RTV also, however using it at the LIM-UIM interface is not recommended in addition to a gasket. Much better to use a light coating of grease or Hylomar (best) to keep the joint from leaking air yet allowing the gasket to be reused.

Also now that the engine bay is clean you'll have to get new hoses to match.

Actually the hoses have been replaced all but the radiator hoses. trying to decide between stock and silicone hoses. leaning toword stock. all the vac lines were changed to fiber braided rubber fuel hoses. should never go soft.....ever.
