My damn MSD. Done pretending.

OK, I have an MSD. Had it for a little while. When I put it on I noticed a few things
-It was a bit smoother from 2-5K rpms.
-No power increase
-My idle was a little ROUGHER! and it jumped around a tad.

And I'm not POSITIVE about this last one, but I am pretty damn sure.
I seem to lose a lot of power over 8000 rpms! It's like it hits a wall.
My engine is a pretty sweet ported deal, and used to rev free till 9000!

Anyone else heard anything about high RPM probs with MSD??

Most of the MSD and Jacobs systems I have seen top out at 8k RPM so what you are describing is accurate.

Check your gap for the rough running, you should be able to open the gap slightly (bending those damm multi-'trode plugs is a pain though, if you have them).

If you saw my plugs you would say whaa??? When you ask about gapping.
They are completely flat.

Anyways- great... Anyone wanna buy an MSD???

I just checked the specs on the MSD website... the 6A is good for 15,000 rpms of a V8.
That's a 4 stroke, and to be honest, I don't know how many sparks there are per revolution.
I don't know why mine (and others) max out at 8,000 on a rotary (1 spark per rev)
Oh well, I'll unhook it and see what happens.

Actually its 6 sparks per one rev of the e-shaft on the leading plugs

leading fires twice every rpm, both times on the same rotor face. the rotor only turns 1/3 every rpm.

It still revs fine out of gear up to 8500 anyways, and it's *OK* in first gear, but under real load, like top of 2nd, 3rd, whatever, it just stops now- and feels/sounds pretty rough.
I am unhooking it.
Damn- It looks so cool, I've got it flush-mounted under a panel I have over the radiator.

Ok- so 6 sparks per rev... A four stroke V8 would have 4 per rev- right??
That means it should still be good to 10,000 RPMS.
Maybe that's not right. But that's at 14.4 volts, and 15 amps.
10 amps brings it down to 10,000 rpm on a V8.
(6666 rpm on a rotary?)
I just don't know.

Also- If I want to make my leading and trailing spark at the same time, can I just splice the ignitor signal wire to the leading coil over to the trailing coil?
I don't really know what the trailing ignition setup looks like- I haven't looked at the trailing coil- ever!!

I guess if you have a series 4, an automatic, or a TII, all with redlines of 7000, it would be fine.

Don't run your leading and trailing together. You will break something.

2 sparks per rev of the e-shaft! 2 sparks, not 6 sparks! Yes, it takes 6 sparks for both rotors to go 1 revolution, but that = 3 e-shaft revolutions! Do the math, 6/3 = 2 sparks per rev! This is the same number of sparks as a 4-cylinder engine. That being stated, the MSD ought to be good to 30,000 rpm on a Rotary! Hence, these MSD's are either hooked up incorrectly or defective, since I have run MSD's over 6,000 rpm on a V8 (equivalent to 12,000 rpms on a Rotary!). The question that I have is this: did you guys having this problem hook up the white trigger wire directly to the coil minus wire under the leading coil black cover? It MUST go there, no other hookup will work correctly! If you did, since a lot of you seem to be having this problem, did anyone call MSD tech support??? Not that they will give you a solution, but maybe if enough people call, they will investigate the problem! ( , I just made a funny! Cracked myself up!) Seriously, though, I'd love to hear their reply, so come on, please, SOMEBODY call them! Personally, I prefer Crane HI-6's, a better product and their tech support is outstanding the 1 time I had to use it!

Yup- Hooked up fine.
Smoother midrange- but bad idle, and a cut at 8000. Don't like anymore.
It's strange.
