My Convertible V8 RX-7 at SevenStock (my thoughts)

Taking my car to SevenStock I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the reactions I got were pretty much the same as I get on this forum, extreme positive and extreme negative reactions. I was at a rotary show after all so I was expecting to take hits.

For the record:

When I was originally building my car, it was for my own enjoyment so I never gave much thought that it would create such controversy. However, one guy at SevenStock said something to me that got me thinking “us rotary guys get so much crap from the piston guys that of course we are going to give you crap” That statement made me understand the extreme negative comments.

I never meant for my car to be a slap in the face of the rotary community. Installing a Chevy V8 in my convertible seemed like the best option for “me” and I don’t come to this forum to recruit people into converting their RX-7’s with V8s, in fact, I try to talk some people out of it. The reason I come to this forum is because I like RX-7s (with or without a rotary)

Note:

I started V8RX7.com to help those who are contemplating a V8 swap by trying to give the facts without giving them bunch of pro V8 hype because I want to sell them a “kit” (i.e. Grannys speed shop)

Summary:

I want to thank SevenStock’s organizers for not kicking my V8 RX-7 out of the show. I had a blast at SevenStock it was fun watching all the reactions to my car (yes even the negative reactions). I also enjoyed seeing all the super clean rotary powered cars (and trucks) I even had some guys from Japan take some pictures of my car for a Japanese only RX-7 magazine. In closing I apologize for the long post, and hopefully I will see all of you next year at SevenStock.

I saw your car there. Gotta say nice work. I'm not a fan of the v8 swap, but you did a good job.

Keep in mind, it was sevenstock, not rotary stock. you do drive a 7, so no reason you shouldn't be allowed in.

of course, if it is sevenstock, why all the rx-2,3,4,REPU's, etc. I guess its a rotary OR seven gathering. As long as you fall into one of the categories.

Don't let the closedminded bigots get you down. You have a nicely engineered car there, if I had the money/time, I'd do it too.

man it sounded like a really nice show. I hope to be able to go next year at least to see what its like. good points on the topic though...we are all enthusiasts of the RX-7, soo just because i change my stock parts doesnt make it less of an RX-7.
hey Pete, any pics? err and any chance you ready to sell me that stuff? :P hope to hear from you soon.

I think a V8 in a vert makes the most sense of any FC. I still say many of the people on here would be as well or better suited with a V8 for what they want out of the car. (I don't mean me)

Will that mag send you a copy if you get in it? You'll have to post it if it happends.

As I said in the other thread

I'm a Wankle fan. But, the only place I wanted to see your V8 Vert besides 7Stock would be to see it parked in my driveway with the pink slip in my file.

Nice job!

Wow... thats cool...
...that takes some serious cajones to show up at sevenstock with a V8, and you know what? power to you man!
Not to say I'd do it to my car, I love my wankel! But a V8 is an efficient way to come up with loads of power (and some torque too... )
Nice car!

I loved your car. Even tho it wasn't a rotary. I'm amazed you can still keep the 50:50 weight ratio in it.
Plus you can pass smog and still have the power. Hell, once I get an RX, and blow the motor, I may yank out a chevy v8 and try and shove it into my rx. We'll see

Yo,

I saw your car, it was very clean! The whole rotary zealot thing is so stupid...I mean, if the rotary engine is the greatest thing since sliced bread why do only .05% of passenger vehicles have them? It's just silly to "diss" pistons. Uh oh, I feel a rotary Jihad coming!

I'd rather see your FC piston powered than in a junkyard. Call me crazy.

Yeh if you guys know sombody that has done the swap, you have to get a ride in it. These things are a blast to drive.

I had a 87 with a rotary before and i loved it too. But we are talkin about free torque and horsepower bolt in with cheap parts at autozone. No more waiting on special orders.

You're right, it does... the convertibles are slightly tail-heavy stock. The extra weight in the front isn't as much of a negative as it is with the coupes. Probably a TII swaybar on the back is enough to balance the difference out.

rotary zealot here

It was a good job in the conversion. I'm not upset at you, I'm upset at the other 5 websites/users doing this. Don't want to start a trend

Your car looks sweet I like the fact thats it's different I personally have more piston powered stuff (Quads, dirt bikes, Street bikes, other cars, My rideing mower all the way down to my weed eaters and nitro powered RC cars) But as a TII owner the rotary is the foundtion of the RX-7, besides like I said evertthing is piston powered from V8s to two stroke weedeaters. After a while its just gets old and sleepy, so now that i think about it, it's not really that different just a common V8 powerplant. Herrrrrrray for big weed eaters.
