Is my Clutch dead?

Is my Clutch dead?

I was driving around today (ok, a little more then just driving) and I noticed when I floored it in 2nd gear the rpm's would peak but the speed would stay nearly the same, until a few seconds later when it would connect and start moving again. This happened again in 3rd, and in 4th. Now it's incredibly hard to shift into 1st, 2nd, and nearly impossible to shift into reverse. Is it just a bad clutch and/or throwout bearing? And what is your guys' opinion on what I should do/buy/get?

btw> I know it didn't do that because the tires were spinning, because I shifted into 4th going around 30 and it still did it.

I just hope this isn't too serious.

u need a clutch job..while ur at it u should change the throw out bearing and the pilot bearing....probably a good idea to rebuild the slave and master cylinder as well.....

Ya like torean said, I changed my clutch and my clutch slave cylinder started leaking, thats bad, so ya replace or rebuild them both.

yep its the clutch, its not a serious problem( but,i wouldnt drive it very far like that or its gonna go out and you'll need it towed home..), its more of a headache/timeconsuming . well if you do it your self anyway.


the fix could cost you do it yer self anywhere from ( min)40-220( do it right replace all the stuff) disk, pressure plate, throwout, piolot, rebuild kits for your master and slave if u want to, ( they are only like 20 bucks for both at the most) this is if u buy parts at shucks or something

yeah and if your lucky you can get a clutch throwout bearing and pilot bearing kit for like 130$.check your local parts store.might want to check your clutch line too.

I replaced the slave cylinder in mine and it really wasn't that expensive whats the point in rebuilding something small and simple?

As for the debate about rebuilding or replacing the clutch hydrolic system, If you have $80, you can get a new Master, Slave, and SS Flex line. Rebuild for slave cost me $10, but i decided not to use it, since (a) if i pull out the slave and the inside is pitted or rusty you need a new slave cylinder anyway, and (b) if you rebuild one part of your 20 year old hydraulic system, then next weakest link is bound to go out sooner or later, (hopefully later). So a rebuild on your slave, will put excess pressure on your flex line and master cylinder that they are not used to. Everything comes down to time or money. If it's a project car, replace it, but if it's your daily driver, do whatever takes to get it back on the road for work in the morning.

I just had similar issues on an 87 i picked up last week, it came with a clutch kit and i didnt have the time with finals and what right now so i had a shop put it in... cost 275 for the laybor (the clutch kit came with the car) then the next day i had major issues with it and it and the clutch wouldnt disengage. I had it towed back to the shop and they had it for a day and i picked it up today... they siad it was the pilot bearing. but in figureing it out they changed the slav cyl. The guy i got the keys from said i didnt owe them anything I took it and ran with it. So for under 300 i got basicly a whole clutch and hyrolic system.

wow nice....a local trans shop around me estimated me a price of ~400 just to change the master and slave...so of course i took my keys.....thanks them for the offer then went home and ordered SS cutch lines on mazdatrix and master and slave from VB..

Replacing the master AND slave takes around 45 minutes to an hour on a 2nd gen.

Easy Job.

I got my master and slave from Nopi for around 70 bucks.

Technically.... while the stock clutch is made of "Organic" materials. It was never alive to begin with, and therefore, is in a non living state... but to say it is dead... that would require it to have been alive... so it is not dead... it IS however, not performing its designed task to specifications and therefore Non-functional, OR, if you prefer:

malfunctioning, out of whack, kaput, flogged, beat, shot, raped, tore-up, stanky, fried, be-schnickled, ****-the-bed, crapped out, el puke-o profuso, roached, k-o'd, deep six'd, headed for file 13, *** hammered, making friends with the garbagemen, looking for a pad at the landfill, on its last legs, taking a snit, SNAFU'd or FUBAR.... but its not dead..

Yeah... I'm bored..

But in the time it took me to write this, you could have had the car up in the air and most of the exhaust off!!!!!

but yeah, as he said, changing clutch and everything isn't that hard, just give it a shot!

but I'd suggest to be two to remove and put in the tranny unless you have a tranny jack

the pilot bearing is A BITCH to remove, and even more a bitch to install
the rest is basic and simple mechanic job

have fun and have a couple of beers while doing this. That was my recipe for succes
