Question My car wont start I tried the ATF trick and the fuel pump switch

I have a 87 GXL that sat for bout a year it would not start so last monday I did the ATF trick and it started right up. Last night before the deal was final I drove it again. It started up great by itself and ran fine. Today I picked it up it fired right up and ran great. Drove it to my house bout 5 miles pulled in my driveway it sat for bout an hour then it wouldnt start. I put a fuel pump switch on it and that didnt work so I tried the ATF trick again and it didnt start. So I took the switch off cuz it worked fine with out it. Tried the ATF again and it didnt work so I have no idea whats wrong with my car. It sound kinda funny when it turns over also. So if any body has any idea whats wrong with my car please help I need to get to work on monday. Thanks for the help Dave

Before you do anything else put some new plugs in. Even if they look kinda ok still try it, at least replace the leading plugs. I spent about a month troubleshooting what turned out to be fouled leading plugs after an atf treatment.... long story. Could be a $20 fix.

To check the fuel pump, find the yellow 2-wire connector on the passenger side of the engine compartment. Short the connector, turn on the ignition. Listen in the back with the hatch open - if you hear a whirring sound, the fuel pump is goin'. If it is, try and start her up. If she starts, you probably have a bad circuit opening relay. If she doesn't, it's something else. To check for flooding, pull out the leading spark plugs, then pull the EGI INJ fuse. Crank her over, if you see gas spraying out of the engine, it sure is flooded. Take steps to correct (ATF, fuel pump cutoff) and try again. Otherwise, maybe you have a blocked fuel filter, I would replace it.

Just a few general suggestions, let us know if you need more direction.

do you smell fuel after you crank it over for a bit w/o it starting?if you do[maybe pop the hood],then its probably flooded.you should hear the fuel pump "whirr"to life when you first turn the key[even thou i'm not sure on the rex,sad thing is,my car's been sitti'n for a year and i can remeber how audible it is on the rex,but its on the verge of comming to life soon!!hehe],you could always pull the rubber fuel hose off and check if ur getting fuel..[have a friend crank it,of course be carefull].if your smelli'n gas,[and u think its flooded]u gota unflood it manualy.check www.rx7.com or do a search for the procedure.my rex used to flood ALL the time,i had to unflood it every time i wanted to start it,but it was becouse of low compression.[wich is why the car's been sittti'n for a year]...good luck

It does sound like its flooded, that whirrling sound is when the motor turns with no compression. What has happened (I bet) is the injectors are leaking, causing the oil to be washed away from the Apex seals...Once you remove & change plugs, pull the fuel inj. fuse by the battery, hop back in, turn over while flooring the gas 3-4 seconds 3-4 times, this injects oil back around the seals. Hop back out and put the fuse back in...then fire it up! Vroom vroom! If that dosn't work, you might have alot of gas in the engine...Try getting a pull strap and pull with another auto...Get up to about 10MPH and put it in gear and pop the clutch! That should start it every time! Good luck! Also change your oil ASAP, its more than likely full of gas...Not good.
