my car won't idle,please help

my car won't idle,please help

I just recently replaced my motor in my 87 m/t non-turbo
and all went well, but when I start my car it will idle up to 3000 then come down to 2000 to begin to idle for 1 second, then shuts off.this really sucks because I really want to drive my car and havent got to drive it yet. PLEASE PLEASE IS THERE SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP ME?!
I have a shop manual.

Check your vaccum lines you might have a leak somwhere. Give mor info.

If you have the shop manual look in the 4A section and just go down the troubleshooting guide. Check your water thermo sensor too because the same thing happened to me. If that is it, you can unplug it and it should run, but that's only if it's the water thermo sensor.

YOu could also have a clogged fuel filter which only gets enough fuel to start and then nothing so it dies. Check your AFM mybe it is not working or you forgot to connect it.

I have changed the fuel filter, afm? there is an inline and and outline for the fuel to go into the engine I have tested the in line for correct pressure(64-84 psi) And am only getting 40psi. the engine that was in the car before idled fine.....I will check the bottom of the fuel filter to see if it is plugged...anywhere else I should check??

The exact same thing happened to me, chech the water thermo sensor behind the water pump area.

I bet you cash that your AFM isnt plugged in...

Been there.. done that... invented new cuss words that day....

AFM is your Air Flow Meter, located right after your air intake box.

bad idle

check the thing under the hood that makes the car rev when you push it...if that is stuck..or something behind it is..that is your problem...you may just need some grease and some movement of it...thats what happened to me...or fiddle around with the idle adjustment screw which is under the black rubber cap ontop of the engine
