Yeah, you guys in Florida dont care about the air you breath. If you lived in So Cal you would understand. The smog gets so bad I can hardly see the mountains 3 miles away.(only on bad days, seriously 3 miles) The mountains become this faint outline. The sky is only truely blue after it rains and all the smog is washed away by way of acid rain. Indifference must be nice.

Wow, that is bad smog. I would move (honestly).
It is normal for a rotary to shoot flames with a modified exhaust. Every once and a while even a stock one will shoot out a little flame - but rarely. This is normal and your engine is still 100% healthy if doing so.
The reason is that with the peripheral style exhaust porting, when there is unburned hydrocarbons (basically left over fuel from the combustion cylce) it just gets pushed out the ehxuast port into the exhaust system. Since the rotary engine burns extremely hot, it is very easy to ignite this unburned fuel and crap and voila... flames!
In the new RX-8's RENESIS engine design, it uses side porting, so when there is unburned hydrocarbons, the apex seal/rotor catches them and pulls them around to be burned up in the next cycle instead of pushing them out the exhaust port. This is the main reason why the new Rx-8 engine, although basically the same as the current 13B, is 33% more fuel efficient and much better on emissions (don't know % of that).

yep, im pretty shure it's 20%, from what iv herd from stories(never seen one in real life) but a parrallel(sp) ported 12a is something to see when comming down from about 11 grand after running hard....

Yep, you are correct. I was assuming the early reports (about a year ago) of what the RX-8 fuel mileage would be is what it is. I did some research and calculations and came up with 19-21% more fuel efficient than an FC.
28 mpg highway (the number I saw most often for RX-8) is still pretty impressive for any "sports car" making that kind of power.

i'm 13b 6port with a holley 650 double pumper, and my exhaust has 3 mufflers in line- but all of them are see-thru. it seems that my car shot flames just about whenever it feels like it.
when i run just a hint of 114 octane leaded fuel (from the formula atlantic cars i used to work on) it could even sit there and just belch a bit of flame at idle.
since i'm running 2stroke oil in my gas (no oil metering pump configuration around that i'd trust with my holley set-up), the smell behind my car is much like following a very large weedwacker, and it does tend to ereupt violently. (the dfw guys i cruise with have seen them extend around 5 feet beind my car, great way to make a minivan quit tailgating me).
only problem i have with my current set up is that it runs at 105.3 dbs, and is making my rear bumber cover a bit gummy at times
