my car caught on fire

long story made short was doing donuts my amp came un hooked from main batt wire and my tools spiled over the wire making it a bad grond hehe
good side was that someone on the crowd had a fire extiguisher and the was only minor damage to the car
i ended up ripping of the center console small patch of carpet burnt . the car starts radio works all lights work the part that i have a question is the car seems to start fine but after 1 minute of the car running the leading coil stops sending spark to the leading plugs
i reapeat when i firt start it it does send spark but stops after 1 minute of running

what would cause that????

by the way spend some $ on a fire extinguisher
if it wasnt for the guys my car would have been totaled.
thanks for the replies im counting on you guys for i have not seen this happen before on the coil isue

Thats the STUPIDEST place ive seen to mount the extinguisher!!!

Your passenger would be KILLED in a side or rear impact!

Place it in the storage compartment!
thats wht they are for, and in a crushing accident, you can still get to it becuase its reinfrced area of the car and wont crush.

And what the HELL happened to that car?
Someone went APESHIT with the red paint.

YYYyiiickk!

you MUST MUST run a fuse on anything comming off the battery. as close to the battery as possable. then you wouldn't have had this problem.

Can someone kindly explain the whole fire extiguisher thing to me.
Senario. Going down the road. Smell gas. Smoke coming from hood. Get out. Open hood. Fire get lots of oxygen. Your on fire. Friends are laughing. Your screaming.
The only reason to have one would be for someone else. Unless you very carefully get the hood open a crack (not easy on my fc) and spray it in.
You know what I would do if my car caught on fire. GET THE HELL AWAY, pray to god that only my engine or wiring harness is screwed.
My opinion

The car looks pretty good though. Not something I would do but, it's your car and everyone personalizes there own stuff.

well if you got out of the car becuase the hood was smoking... you would probably have it in your hand ready to go before you opened the hood...

Well its true?
that thing isnt light.
its pretty stout.

A good real end impact, or side impact will send that thing into SOMEONE.

It's just a little fire. If you dont put it out you will lose your car. Your choice.

The fire exstiguisher on the passenger pillar is stupid.

prmazdarx7, sorry to here about your amp fire. Had a friend that did the saMe thing a few years ago. Go get you a good Pheniox Gold fuse block. Make sure it isn't going to be somewhere in the car where yours tools may hit it.

Again, you have no one to blame for your fire but yourself. Not running a breaker or a fuse and you deserve an electrical fire.

Sniper, I agree. Very bad mounting place choice. And yes, all the red paint looks like ***.

For those of you actually into racing, or those like me who enjoy huge levels of overkill, a fire bottle is always a good idea. You can activate it from the cockpit, and it fills the engine bay (or cockpit, depedning on install) with Halon gas. Of course, the $500 set-up isn't cheap, but again, if you are actually concerned about hood fires...

Let's see now... Try this for scenario:

See smoke from under hood or engine dies. So, you TURN OFF THE IGNITION so that fuel is stopped being fed into the engine bay, and power is cut to major circuits.

Grab fire extinguisher and go to hood. Open hood and fire does not rage up since fuel supply is dying down. Engine does not have a mind of its own and the ability to spray fuel in your exact direction, so you don't ignite and spontaneously combust. Point fire extinguisher at fire and put out fire.

God, where does all this fuel come to for this huge backdraft effect? Light a bucket on fire, filled with gasoline, put a lid on it for ten seconds, and then lift the lid. Fire is not going to shoot out at you.
Not to mention the rush of oxygen from above is not that big a deal since there is already oxygen from below...

Been watching "Backdraft" a bit too much, have we? Let me know how much it sucks to watch your car burn to the ground knowing you could have done something?

are you sure they're not sending sparks, have you taken off the wires on the coil side?

There IS a reason they make all SCCA race cars have a fire extinguisher in them at a MINIMUM.. one for driver safety, and two, so you can put the friggin' thing out if it ever catches fire. Same thing with corner workers, they all have these HUGE fire bottles for putting out blazes in various parts of cars. They're not just going to sit there watching it burn, they'll yoink off the hood and spray the biotch down.

When I put in my 250 watt amp in my car I just went to wal-mart and bought a whole kit for like 25 bucks and it came with a hudge in line fuse and everything I needed to wire in a amp. When my friend put a system in his truck he went to a stero store called tweater and spent like 120 on the a kit with "better" stuff and got noise.

It has nothing to do with the cables type\etc, too many variables to name the specific cause of noise.

Grounds, running the RCA along the power cable, levels mismatch, etc, are examples of common niose problems.

How did you test to make sure the coil stopped firing. Did you actually test it by looking or does the car just die afterwards. That's weird it would only spark for one minute. It would seem odd that the coil was toast, because technically it works (for one minute anyways). I would test or replace all the wires, charge the battery, and possibly try new coils or junkyard coils. With wiring it usually takes awhile to sort out. Test eveything. Good luck!
