I'm saying that even if you've tuned it, set it up, and don't HAVE to keep an eye on the boost, it's still an important tool to have all the time. Why? Because **** breaks. Vacuum lines crack/fall off, atmospheric variables vary, the planets align and sometimes all hell just breaks loose. They're good to have.

No, being off by 1/2psi wouldn't matter a whole lot, but since it is clearly off, who's to say it's actually accurate? Like I said the first time, I would take it back and get another one. It doesn't necessarily have to be a different model gauge, just one that isn't that far off to begin with.

 

I understand what Rob is saying completely. We are not running machines that are going to blow due to 1/2psi difference between boost gauge and actual boost.

I can and I'm assuming other drivers also can tell round about where their boost is without looking at the gauge. When I'm WOT I'm heads up on the road and catching glimpses of my gauges. When I "feel" something different from the car I'm checking gauges.

I don't think Rob said to throw out your boost gauges. He's simply making the point that if your car is tuned and controlled you shouldn't be relying on or worried about a $40 boost gauge that is 1/2 psi off.

Autometer has a full range of series some cheap and some expensive. To make a blanket statement that all Autometers are junk is silly.

Anyway, I knew this post is going to turn out to be an autometer hate thread. I already contacted them and hopefully i get a replacement.

 

it would be wise to check with another gauge, I know my gauges are accurate because of triple redundancy, I happen to run a blitz boost gauge only because I thought it looked cool, but I would not hesitate to run a AM boost gauge that matched my AM water temp and oil psi gauges

I dont want to sound like a douche, but WOT at 15lbs in a 400hp car is a different scenario then WOT with a 200hp car, the engine is revving so fast and you are concentrating on controlling tire spin, shifting at the right time , its literally put the foot to the floor and grab a gear 1-2-3

 

imagine having a temp gauge thats off by a slight few degrees, being on a scale that covers a wide range of temps, it could be just a few marks off.. 205 degrees is acceptible, 210 degrees is considered hot.

That 1/2 off may multiply when going up the scale etc

a VDO boost gauge is looking pretty dam nice compared to autometer gauges and still about same price.

Seriously I would consider changing that gauge eventually, not necessary but SO INACCURATE ITS OUT OF THE FREAKING BOX!!! AND THEY USE A BOX TO REPRESENT ANYWHERE BEING ZERO

I honestly dislike autometer in a japanese car. Dont get on that "im so jdm" bullshit, they just don't match imo. You dont see threads about people questioning HKS, Apexi, Defi etc or even VDO that does gauges for alot of OEM application.

 

you really think a old used gauge is accurate just because it says Blitz on it, come on man.
I have 3 ways of reading temps, and all 3 read identical, and this includes the factory "sucky" s4 temp gauge in my car. My autometer reads the same as the sucky s4 temp gauge, and it reads the same as the temp senders in my water pump housing for the wolf. People pass on information when they have no clue what they are talking about, "s4 gauge sucks", that and my oil gauge are actually really accurate. Autometer suck, dude they have been in business longer then we have been alive, you guys think your cars are vital try all the race boats that have 2-3 $150k motors in them, all autometer gauges, but yeah we know they suck and only belong in US cars.
Stop drinking the coolaid man there is a whole other world out there that uses these gauges besides this tiny RX7 community

 

this is all true. ive also done the stock S4 gauge vs well i used greddy, vs the haltech, and they all agree.

i also have a couple of these cheapie autometer gauges, and they vary by like 4psi in my toolbox (one is +2psi and the other is -2), but its also the cheapie gauge.

the mechanical DEFI gauges are just as bad, and they are WAY more expensive

 

yeah, a box at zero means its not accurate


the $200+ blitz gauge in my own car has the "box", HKS has a mighty fat line, might as well be a box, **** even the vdo gauge you yourself linked has the fat line at zero, oh thats right a fat line is more accurate then a box.

 

hmm i think the autometer i have is a bit incorrect while off as well.

 

I run a knightsports boost gauge cause I'm full JDM yo! It was out a little when I got it so I just pulled it apart and bent the tube till it was on 0 CALIBRATED!
