My baby wont start !!
Hi all,
I own '86 GXL. A few days ago I started the car, it started fine and went into 3K warm up. Stayed there for 20-30 seconds and then climed dowm. But then instead of stopping at idle it just died on me. I tried starting it again, the engine would seem to start catching on but wouldn't start. I had new spark plugs that I meant to use for a while. So I decided to switch plugs and check if the engine is flooded. The old plugs were worn but dry. Once new plugs went in, the car started and run fine for a day. Next day it wouldn't start again. This time at all, the engine no longer catches. It acts as if flooded but its not. Checked fuel pressure; seems fine. Checked for spark, that seems to check too. Out of ideas what to do next. 102K miles on the engine. No real problems up to now.
Thanks for any help.

Hey1 i'm not exactly an Rx-7 member, but have been a girlfriend of one for 3 years, and clearly your motor is flooded. so call it a dirty ******* bitch, kick the tire a couple of times and let it sit for 1/2 an hour. then it should be good to go. and your baby will purr as well as she did before.

Sorry Curtass... nice try but...
I've posted this before, The RX7 Won't unflood itself. You can wait 5 minutes, you can wait 5 hours. As for the car not starting, I can think of a few things... A)Spark, if it's not the plugs, maybe the wires are old. B)Fuel, injectors clean? Are they fouled up causing the stall? At 102K, I hope you don't need a rebuild on an N/A.
And as to answer curtass' statement, the best way to fix this is to pull the EGI fuse inside the engine bay, crank the car over 2 or 3 times to get all the leftover fuel out. Put the fuse back in and start 'er up. This should work but will smoke for a sec 'cuz of all the fuel.
And Nikko, I hope it's not losing compression Good luck! Keep us posted.

Take the spark plugs out, pull the egi fuse, crank for about 30 seconds then try to start. You might also want to pull the plug on the fuel pump while cranking so that it won't flood again this way you can press the pedal to the bottom letting more air in...

What is with all of the fuse pulling? I agree with everyones assessment on flooding, but all you really need to do is hold the throttle down all the way. I talked to the mechanic at Mazda who swapped my engine a month ago, and he said that this actually shuts off the fuel supply to clean out the chambers. When my car doesn't start, I hold the throttle down and always within about 5-10 seconds, it starts with a lot of smoke, however.
And Curtass, no one is being rude, but the rotory is definitely a different beast than anything that you may be familiar with.

I flooded my car several times before. Deflooded it with the fuse-pull method. I just checked my plugs again, they are completely dry. Tried deflooding several times anyway, didnt help.
RotorDemonGXL, how do I check if the injectors are dirty? On that note, do the fuel cleaner products for piston engines work on rotaries? Also, when I crank the engine, all the accessories spin, can it be that the starter motor is still not pulling enough tho? thnx.

It says right in the owners manual "to unflood, hold the accel to the floor and crank for 8-10s. Then release the accel and crank it over again, should start".
