Taken directly from the FAQ:

My RX-7 rev's up to 3000 RPM everytime I start it when cold
Yep, part of the accellerated warm up process. Start the car with the clutch pressed in, and the car in gear if you don't want it to do that.

As far as I know all FCs do this. It's an accelerated warm-up process.

It's all good, I remember when I first got my 7 I thought something was wrong with it because it did that... come to find out, it's supposed to rev to 3k. ^_^

is it really bad to let it do the warm up process?

Or bypass the system like I happily did in my FD. The reason Mazda opted for the AWS was due to emissions when cold, the increased RPM causes the engine to warmup faster thus less hydrocarbons are released. The wear cannot be that detrimental, otherwise Mazda would of found a better way, however, I still account it as possible. ...and considering I always allow proper warm-up before driving I never felt it was needed.
