it certainly helps im not going to say you ABSOLUTELY need one but it does help, because when you think about it your drifting around a corner the wheels are spinning the power want to go to the path that has least resistance and in an open diff it will find that way and effectivley loose your drift, but with an LSD it will lock both wheels and keep power going to each and making a good drift

#2 in GXL models only the 86-88 GXL had a LSD
#3 there is no need to get a LSD to drift... you just need practice.

I'm going to say you don't need one, but it makes the drift easier, hang out farther, and finish smoother. Without the lsd, you really have to huck the car to get it steep and deep. But it is possible

Why dont you weld the diff so both wheel always spin at the same speed, like a hotwheels car? I would think that would get your *** out when you wanted it to.
You still need some differential action(different wheel speeds) while turning.

The LSD is required to perform certain drifts. The 360 power over requires LSD as the Drift King said so in the Drift Bible. LSD is a big and noticeable improvement. I been drifting with my 1991 Mazda Miata 1.6L and it has no LSD, but can slide quite well. I suggest you watch the "Drift Bible" for all your questions in drifting.

hmmm ive been watching this alot too, but you do hear that he says if your lucky you can upgrade diffs, because in japan everthing is better the grass is greener, all the cars have lsd, and look so cool,

fwiw: when I accidentally drift going around corners without an lsd, the rear end likes to just "grab" and twist me back straight. on my friends s2000(with lsd), if i keep in it, the "grab" is less pronounced and feels a little smoother. (could just be the tires)

They will also bolt into the later 1994+ Miata housing since they are basically the same diff type (the 1989-91 RX-7 LSD will also fit but it is a viscous type, the earlier RX-7's had smaller axle shafts and won't fit). The OEM RX-7 clutch type LSD does have replaceable friction plates and is rebuildable.
Miata drivers take RX-7 LSD units, stock for stock, bolt in. Theoretically, the swap works both ways. Find a wrecked Miata. I got a 1999 Miata Torsen diff with 4.30:1 ring and pinion for $310 shipped.
Doing the swap on my 1st gen.
Take a look at www.car-part.com and www.mazdarecycling.com .
Enjoy.
EDIT: I don't normally come in here, I just noticed this thread in the Last posted column of the main page of the forum.
