Overly advanced ignition timing will cause it to detonate.
The leading mark is at 5-degree ATDC.  The trailing mark is at 20-degrees ATDC.  There's a 15-degree difference between the two marks.

I heard heavily modded n/as can run 30 degrees for their race engines. But thats for racing and is dangerous
I think I heard somewere that 24 degrees is ok for say an n/a heavily modded but for the street. Dont take my word for it thou

to do it right you need a gun that can adjust the timming on it. so if you want to advance it 5 degrees. you advance the gun 5 degrees then align the mark. I wouldn't try to guess by how far off the marks by turning it using a cheap timming gun.

after i lost the engine i got to reading on timing, and found that if you install the cas properly, you can't advance/retard the timing too far without taking the cas out. you should be fine with adjusting it from the factory setting even to its maximum adjustment limits.
