msd dis 2 ignition control

Has anyone ever tried one of these on there 7? I've been looking for aftermarket ignition system and was looking at the jacobs rotary and the msd 6AL but then I saw that msd offers a distributorless ignition system with all the capabilities of the 6AL. Any input on aftermarket ignitions would be apreciated.

A DIS-2 is used on a *TWO* channel system.
Therefore, it's a waste to be used on the leadings.
Installing a DIS-2 on the trailings (only) is overkill, unless you're making over 400hp.

So how many channels are our ignitions. Actually I should be asking what a channel is.

One channels fires both leadings.
Therefore, if you want to stuff a CDI box on just the leadings, you just need a one channel CDI box.
cheap - MSD 6A, Crane Cams HI-6, Mallory Hyfire
expensive - MSD Digitial 6

For trailings, there are two channels for T1 and T2.

A "channel" is a unique ignition channel or wire that has it's own unique signal from the ECU.
The stock ignition uses three channels of ignition: L1 + L2, T1, T2

Short answer, no - we tried it.

Long answer, the DIS-4 wants to see (up to) 4 sequential ignition signals.
This means the ignition has to fire (up to 4) equally spaced ignition trigger signals to work properly.
Since the RX-7 L1+L2, T1, T2 ignition channels do not fire at equally spaced intervals, this confused the DIS-4 and causes it to barf.
It would've been nice if it did.
About the only thing that I know will work is the Autronic unit which costs a LOT!

darn, the reason I wanted an aftermarket ignition upgrade is for the driveability and the ability to run a 2 step rev limiter. Since a drag and bracket race, a two step would be a nice nice thing to have. And ever since I vented the stock BOV to the atmosphere my idle dropped to 500 RPM. Since I have mostly opened up all the intake and all of the exhaust, and this is my daily driver, it would be nice to have a rock solid idle and a little more torque. Thanks again for the info Ted.
