Mounting a gauge on my dash
Mounting a gauge on my dash
I tried to mount a single gauge pod on my steering coulmn today and ended up splitting it in half when I tried to screw it in. Now I'm looking at just mounting it on my dash, but I'm afraid I'll end up doing the same thing and making a hole in the dash for nothing.
Is there anything special you guys are doing or just drilling it in?
Thanks for the help.

really? i was able to get mine in without a problem at all. i jsut predrilled a hole a little bit smaller than the screw and put on the gauge.
here is the best shot that i have of it http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c7...r/100_0405.jpg
the only gauge cluster gauge that it blocks is the stock boost gauge.

You guys don't find having an aftermarket gauge directly in front of the stock gauges (blocking at least one of them) annoying as hell?
In order to not split plastic, you need to predrill the hole. Drill to the size of the shank on the screw and then don't over tighten.
If you are going to mount several gauges, I have found the perfect solution. For my car I bought an generic APC 3 gauge pod. I shaved about 1/4" off the bottom and then contoured it roughly to match the dash. I then epoxied small angle irons to the bottom and stuck it to the dash with double stick 3M tape above the idiot cluster. Looks pretty good and doesn't interfere with the functionality of the car. The bottom where it meets the dash is still a little rough so I'll probably use some felt or something to clean it up.

Well, I did predrill the hole, but maybe it wasn't big enough. I just don't want to have to look for a new cover everythime I make a mistake because old plastic is very unforgiving.
As for it blocking the stock gauges Aaron, I tested it out to see if it would block anything important before I tried to mount it there and I can still see my speedo and tech. Those are really all I need to see because I've got aftermarket gauges to replace all of the stock gauges under my deck in the centre console.
Thanks for the help guys. I'll try drilling a bigger hole and see if that works.

Test out the hole size on the old broken surround so you don't ruin a new one.
Also, 5one5 innovations makes a dual pod that goes where the idiot lights went, and you can relocate the idiot lights to below the radio, if you want to go that route.

After pre-drilling the holes Heat the screw with like a butain lighter this will help soften the plastic as it goes in and prevent cracking. But here is the catch don't heat it up so it is glowing orange an melts a big hole in the dash. O and don't burn your self.
