MOTOR IS SMOKING! help....

Im pulling into a parking lot after driving from my house to the store and as I pull in it starts POURING smoke from the engine bay...

WHAT THE HELL....

Open hood and its smoking bad.. Eventually there is a pool of coolant under the car. I see that alot got near the exh. manifold cover and was being burnt. I inspected what I could see and jacked the car up and didnt see any visible hoses undone, no major leaks after car was off for a few minutes to cool enough for me to get under.

Freeze plugs ???
Some unseen coolant hose???

Car has koyo rad. and exh. no other mods. I know rad was installed right and working properly so what could it be?

Its sitting in that lot and I NEED HELP

The cold start assist on the Upper intake Manifold UIM is very easy to see. Its where all the pipes, four of them, connect to the lower intake manifold the LIM. Just follow from the top of your throttle body, it says Mazda 13b injection on it or something. Trace that to where it turns into cylinders, and the COLD start assist should be sitting smack dab in the middle with a black 1/4 hose going into it. The fitting is brass colored.

thanks for the link... im reading it not. But the smoke was coming from at least 1/2 way down. It wasnt an upper hose. while looking from above I couldnt source the smoke but it was rolling from below up both sides of motor (windy so the leak may be on one side just blowing up)

This doenst sound like a coolant gasket leak. not sure how this cars freeze plugs are or where they are and how they act... So im going to go try and notice any smaller hoses, but Im at a loss... Ill wait around for any more help. Thanks alot

trust me......your leak is coming from under the manifold. squeeze the rubber line in red and leason/look for a leak. or use your hand to follow the line going into the coldstart. Stand by for a better pic

Ok, just rode back out and hunted... I will give it to you.. The leak is coming from DIRECTLY in the middle of the fire wall (inline with the 13B fuel injection stamped on the manifold) No I cannot see its direct leak source, but see it start to flow from there. I can def. hear it when I squeeze the upper radiator hose and there is a direct stream that flows to the tranny where it finally drops to the ground.......

It didnt seem to be the hose that you labeled but maybe one underneath there...

Not the labeled hose, but the hose on top comes from the cold start. UNDER the cold start is the feed from under the uim. You are gonna have to pull off the uim to fix it. Easy to do and a great way to check vac lines/omp lines. All you will need is a uim to lim gasket.

um, ok... just steping into rotory's... I dont know how to identify the cold start, the UIM, and the LIM (nor what the last two are)

Pics are def appreciated...

Also, certain tools which parts are needed to be removed in what order, and what should I watch out for (anything I cant touch or shouldnt tamper with) etc... The back olf that manifold is foreign to me so I must admit I dont know what Im touching. But the work isnt an issue.

Once I know what im doing and what im looking at it can get done...

So def, please continue to help.

My aim is boostman2k5 if your on it...

Is there one online? none can be found in my area at any local shops and I have yet to order one...

Basically.. By remocing these, what am I doing or accomplishing. Just clearing room to replace a hose?

this is the pic you need to pay attention to:

follow the red hose down to where it meets the rear iron housing, also inspect the heater hoses at the firewall and be sure one of them doesn't have a pinhole leak in one of them.

only if he has no smog in his area, im getting a bit annoyed with the infatuation of removing the rats nest on n/a's, there is no performance gains from removing it.

remove the throddle cable bolts....2 remove air intake. remove the REAR fuel line going into the top fuel rail. swing it out of the way. 2 bolts holding down the secondary rail. 4 nuts on studs coming out of the lim. a few vac lines on the rear and drivers side, and the bolts on the pedistals. also remove the line in question. that is about it.

afaik you dont need to remove anything to get to that line, though it is a bit tricky it may be worth looking to see if you can switch it out without removing the whole top end.

That and why would you remove it if you have no real reason to.

I thought about it on my 91 but I was like... mmm why... what do I gain... then I was like... oh yeah NOTHING.

other than a slightly simpler engine top.

Ryan there is a FSM (Factory Service Manual) link in the FAQ sticky... you should read the sticky and make bookmark to important things like the FSM and the parts manual page just for ease of use later.
