the car is being towed to the bronx today, from there I'll get the flywheel off and see whats up with the bolt. Just for arguments sake, what if it is snapped? seal the hole?

 

uhh no, then you will have uneven tension on the housings... bad bad bad!!!

 

so if it's snapped, I'm looking at a rebuild? Because in that case....It's time to swap in my turbo drivetrain

I can't give you a definitive answer, because honestly i don't know. But what I can say is that if the bolt snapped on me I would be rebuilding.

c'mon guys I need some advice from someone thats experienced this. I have the bolt out and it looks as if th last quarter or half of an inch is snapped off. There's a lot of thread left on the bolt. Could I possibly cut a 1/4 inch off the new bolt and put it in?

 

you could but then you run the risk of stripping either the new bolt or the hole its self. in whitch case you just screwed the pooch so the disition is up to you. if you have other transporttion start rebuilding.

Well basically the pooch has already reached **** status. I'm already somewhat screwed. I do have an answer though with my TII drivetrain but if I can save this low mileage N/A engine it would be better. I dont want to really do the swap until I have a fresh motor built

 

you try using one of those reverse threaded tapping devices...EZ-Outs or whatnot, and turning the remaining part of the bolt out?...would that work at all?

 

The motor bolts only go into the front housing about a half inch (or less). They have way more thread on them than necessary.

I bet you that the bolt broke off flush with the front housing and regardless of the length of the new bolt there will not be any threads available to screw into.

I think you have two options.
A) pull it and rebuild or in your case move on to the turbo projbect.

B) Risk trashing the motor and drive it the way it is until you can get a different motor. It may last 30 seconds or it may last a few weeks. It is hard to tell. In doing this you risk trashing parts of this motor that are currently good and could possibly be used in a rebuild (side housings will probably warp).

 

Thanks carmon. i appreciate the input. I think I'm going to risk it. I only need a few more weeks before I take my car off the road. I would just like to hear from anyone who has run wityhout a bolt.

This just happened to my GTUs, but I have two bolts that have sheared off. Not only did they shear, but also might have stripped out the threads in the front housing.

We just tapped the two tension bolt holes, put in some grade 8 bolts, and called it good.

I just drove about 1,000 miles down to Sevenstock and back, no problems. Been driving the motor like I have been before I knew about the problem, redline, all the time.

If it blows up, it blows up, but nothing bad has happened yet. Might last another 70K miles!

Gonna put a CAI and a S-AFC II on it and beat it s'more!!

If at al possible I would at least try to fix it first. If you could find the right tap that is big enough I say go for it.

 

well after talking to rarest, Ive decided that trying to run with the motor is the best idea. The motor would be a pain in the *** to sell anyway. So I'm going to bolt up the turbo tranny and flywheel and drive the N/A into the ground. when it blows, I'll drop in the TII motor!
