**** man you are asking to be flamed.
Use the search button on the top on right on the page. start searching for compression test/apex seal/whatever you want to find info about, there is so much information here, you just need to search!

A "bad" apex seal means the engine is toast.

A compression test can be done very easily, just search for that. Buy or borrow a compression tester.

compression testing is a good start at finding out if something is wrong-a step in the right direction. as icemark says, anything under 6's should be a rebuild. a busted apex seal will give you similar numbers, bc without the apex seal, the rotor face is losing compression, which will show up on the compression checker(its best to use the $fancy$ mazda one, but normal ones will work too)
some advice id give for you is if your new to rotary engines, do some research before you decide to buy one, just so you have a better idea. the FAQ has some great info on what to look for when buying an fc. also, when i first wanted an fc, i spent hours(that i should have spent on school
)studing diagrams and whatnot of the rotary so i could understand how it worked.
fc's are reeeaaaallly fun cars-i hope you find a good one soon

A compression check will tell you what is happening with a rotary. Pretty much figure any rotor faces under 90-85 PSI (on a conventional compression gauge) will require the engine to be rebuilt. Remember to get an accurate compression check, the motor should be warm, and the with the spark disabled, and the throttle at WOT, as the gas and oil dumped in at WOT will help lubricate and set seals.
All that said, a FC with a blown motor is not worth more than $1000 no matter what model. This is based on that a new reman'd motor from Mazda is around $2500 plus the labor to put it in. Now you may be able to rebuild yourself, but that does not change the value.
And Buy the video on rebuilding... if there is someone with it online- it should be reported as copyright violation. Bruce and Co deserve every penny for their video and it helps pay so that more things like that are available for our cars. If no one made any money on video or parts for the FC, the aftermarket would dry up.

i completly 100% agree.
if you dont feel comfortable checking the compression yourself(i wouldnt have when i was buying my first)you have EVERY right as a potential buyer to take the car to a mechanic and have them check it out.
i HIGHLY reccomend this...it would have saved me about $5,000
it will give you insight into what, if any problems exist, the scope/magnitude of the problems, and how much $money$ it will take to fix it. from there you will have a much clearer picture of weather the car is worth it-to you(and thats the most important part)
Edit: if the seller doesnt want to let you take the car to a mechanic-RUN!!
well it looks like i have a lot of time to research no one bought my car and everyone is lowballing me on it so i have to come up with an idea of what to do to sell my car as i am selling it i will continue to learn and read and continue to shop for cars thanks for all the info you have given me!
