Mods lowering engine life?
I read a post a couple of days ago asking why so many rotary engines require rebiulds and replacements with such low mileage. The general answer was that people improperly mod their engines, making them better breathing but not supplying the necessary additional fuel that comes with an upgraded intake/exhuast. I'm just wondering if putting on a K&N Cone Air Filter and maybe some 3'' mufflers (only mufflers, not a full exhuast) will harm my engine in any way? I got a '88 N/A with 45000km (30,000miles), original mileage, and I don't want to shorten the life of this great engine in any way.
Thanks,
Nima

I think some don't last because some people don't take care of them. Sure you should always change your oil often, but I think alot of people forget how important it is to also change the coolant often at least every 2 years. These engines create more heat, so the coolant issue is very important! Take care of your RX-7 and it will take care of you!

so true ..i agree with the previous members its how u care for ur car...and how u drive it.. we all think that since we made some mods on it to help it perform better thats true but the construction of the vehicle and the engine for the better part of the car wasnt made for the way that we drive or like to drive them. from jack rabbit starts... always driving at open throttle ,, not letting the oil pressure operate at normal ect... so alway remember the life of the car goes with the way its driven and the maintenance thats put into it ..

The changes you mention on a NA are just fine, but on a T2 or a FD those changes can add another couple of lbs of boost, which will lower engine and driveline life if you were not careful watching your driving style.

that is correct, that is exactly the reason most people blow their T2's and FD's, its not that important with a n/a cause you dont get added boost and therefore leanout, when you do those mods

removing the stock cats and added a K&N will increase the life because it's more effecient so the engine will have less stress and heat. this on a turbo requires more fuel but not an NA. my biggest concern with yours would be the millage. these cars NEED to be driven and reved. you's won't get as many k's as ones that are driven every day.

Yeah actually I've owned mine for 3 months now, and I drive it everyday. However the guy that owned it before me had it for 13 years and put no km's on it...hopefully the engine is still in good condition.
