Depends.

For power start with the exhaust.
For reliability buy another car.

I went with suspension and got some quality coilovers. Next stop: exhaust.

You first mods should be stuff that is already bound to be wrong on a 20 yr old car. A nice tune up would be my first choice, fuel pump, filter plugs wires all this stuff and more should be taken care of.
Build a good foundation before building the house.

and replace the bushings. best decision of my life.

then it depends what you want to do doing with the car. for grip, autox, or drift, i would start off with some decent coilovers, replace the diff fluid, and go practice. add power as you get better/have the money to afford the supporting fuel mods.

turbo of course i wanted to do some simple mods and just wanted to know what everyone else has done to get some extra ponies in there car. i was thinking

intake
apex power fc d-jetro (with boost kit )
stance coilovers
3 inch exhaust

it should be good for a extra 100hp. i going to be buying my first rotary in a couple of weeks and i want to know what some people have on there car. i own a evo 8 so having another car isn't a problem.

maintenance

keep a back up of at least 2k in case you have an accidental blown engine

but if you do the maintenance part of the list, it should be a while before the engine goes haha

But first, you need to do maintenance. Full tune-up, replace ALL fluids, replace belts, go over all wear items, etc.

I just got mine and have already found several things wrong that the last owner did and a bunch of stuff that needs attention. Fix all the stock stuff first to get a baseline. And howdy neighbor from killeen.

Get a comfortable desk chair. you'll get back problems from bad posture if you don't. You'll quickly find that you spend as much time driving the car as you do on here, if not x10 more times on here than in the car.

All I can say is make sure your not leaking fuel in the engine bay, then I'd do a full tune up with new belts, fluids, vac hoses, etc.... Then have fun driving it stock while it lasts. And please don''t crash the car whilst being a street racer.

Oh and read the FAQ at the top of the second gen sections, this question as well as tons of others are addressed there, plus lots of links to great info for a new owner.

Hope it works out okay. Please post pics when you get the car.

Wow, somebody with a good plan! I'm totally shocked. Most people blow every cent of their money on the initial cost of the car and a bunch of unnecessary ricer add-ons like cheap mad drift-yo coilovers, and then they curse the rotary engine when their mechanically-neglected 20-year old car breaks down and they can't afford to fix it.

Absolutely. Most used FC RX-7's need about $5K in general maintenance items. Unfortunately, most owners ignore this and drive the car until it breaks.

Damn, beat me to it. The turbo is water cooled so a timer isn't necessary.

+1. I spent most of my money buying the car and rebuilding the engine and my seven is till in the garage. If only I had knew I would have waited for a nice TII.

unless the coilovers act as bigger injectors, fuel pump, and turbine, i dont think you'll be making a 100 extra hp from exhaust and intake, unless the boost kit is a turbo kit.

definately get a FCD from knightsports or another good company, atleast an fd fuel pump, 720 secondaries, and tune.

this is all, of course, after maintenance is taken care of.

personally i wouldnt get a fcd if i was to get a aftermarket exhaust and i would save up for a rtec or something like that at the same time because fcd can be dangerous to your car but that for more power a regular tune up should be done first.
