Model year vs. year built?
Ok, fairly simple question: my car has 89 on the title, and 4/89 on the body, but it has a 160 MPH speedometer, while I think the 1989 model year actually had a 150 MPH speedometer... does that mean it's a 1990 model year, or is it just an 89 with a 160 MPH speedo?

Well I wasn't asking if it was an S4 or an S5 :P
It's just that the brochures in that one thread say the GTU in 89 came with a 150 MPH speedo, and the GTU in 90 came with a 160 MPH, which is what I have.

Well keep in mind that Mazda wasn't exactly pinpoint consistant with all the parts that went into the cars. Some s5's came with parts from s4's. Especially when they switched to the s5 model, they went so crazy trying to crank out cars to meet their expected demand that they could've thrown things in from the last lines before the new parts like 160mph dials were shipped to them. That problem, obviously, never really affected their sales, though, because the damand for s5's just wasn't there like it was for s4's. All I'm saying is, although your question isn't about series, I'm highlighting Mazda's known practice of flubbing up consistency between cars and "vanity parts" as I call them, like the wishful thinking 160mph speedo.

It's a manual. And I was just curious... I always thought that in America, model year was always a year ahead of the production year.
Although I really need to get that damn flywheel nut off... the e-shaft nut came off without a problem (total of 8 feet or so worth of breaker bars, 4 or so feet on each side), but I don't have a flywheel stopper, or a decent makeshift one. Tried a piece of wood, but the teeth actually chewed through it...
