minimum for small turbo on an N/A 13B?

ok guys, since I had my plans for a full turbo car fall through I was just wondering if some of you could help me out with another idea, I want to run a turbo on my current car running very low boost. Won't be as fast but it'll still be faster than what I have. What are the minimum requirements for running a turbo on an s4 13B? I've been told before that the stock N/A ecu can cope with small amounts of boost, up to 5 psi or something, is that true?

I've already read the faqs and what, I'm just curious what can be done.

Thanks in advance for the help.

After you read this talk to Aaron Cake or go to his website.

Use a stock turbo(preferably the S5 because the wastegate is better)
You will need a spacer for it to fit without hitting the intake manifold.
Front mount the stock IC
Custom piping
550 primaries and 680 secondaries(just to be on the safe side)
S-afc
CAI

Thats as far as I can think of. There is most likely a lot more. Specially the exhaust adaptation.

Disclaimer: Everything contained herein my post is what I have done, it is by no means the best way to go about things and may possibly blow up and kill lots of small kitten in the process, your millage may vary.

My first turbo setup consisted of a 99% stock N/A ECU/Fuel system(only changed fuel pump to aS6 one) with a stock S4 turbo with a ported wastegate. This setup ran perfectly on 5psi for a fair while until the turbo crapped out on me.

So Yes it IS possible on the stock ECU/Fuel system to run about 5psi "safely".

I however ran my new turbo setup, slightly bigger than stock turbo, on the stock 460cc injectors on 10psi for a while on a butt dyno tunned microtech....
Worked great until it spiked to 18psi...

I wouldn't advise running a smaller turbo than a S4 item... unless Your just doing it for ***** and giggles and trying to see how much down low torque you can get out of a 13b.

chances are, with the time and $$$ you put into turboing your n/a you would of paid in full for a basic Tii swap.

Yep.. it doesn't seem like much to slap a turbo on an N/A, but it is.
The results are mixed.
You get an engine thats more powerfull at stock boost than a TII (higher compression) but also one that you have to watch for more because it's running closer to the edge due to the lack of boost dependant fuel delivery and timing! An S-AFC, or even better, an F-con is a requirement.

Have any questions, let me know.. I've done my turbo NA engine in 3 different versions.

first of all, I already lost the chance for a full turbo conversion, and I understand the risk of running boost on the higher compression. I can get some of the parts but not all and have not too much money to work on. I was just wondering if it could be done cheaply, without too much changing to the system and running very low (compared to everyone on here who wants to run 10+) boost. I only want a small improvement right now anyway.

The main reason I want to know this is that I can get a turbo pretty cheap but not everything else for the turbo car. I do plan on eventually doing a full conversion if I still have the car later on or if say... I dunno.. the engine blows from doing something like running a turbo on it

Try and find the vert ecu, I believe it has the boost maps. The exhaust manifold spacer can be fabricated easily and cheaply with rb exhaust flanges. Other than that, you'll need to take care of the fuel delivery and a t2 hood for the stock IC. It can be done for less cost than a full t2 conversion. You will need to upgrade the clutch though and preferably a light flywheel to prolong the life of the n/a tranny.
