Might be buying an FC from a private party would like some advice

The body shows it age, but the car runs awesome it has 150k miles and is an 87. I don't know too much about cars, mainly looking for a car I don't have to make payments on, but having to go to the shop every month would be just as bad.

Only other notable thing is this, it lacks a muffler, I live in WA and am not %100sure of our car laws, anything know what this is about?

if the car has not had a engine rebuild then I whould stay away from that one if I was you. but if it has had a rebuild then I whould think about it if the price is right.

I was able to talk them down to $750 ($950 originally) and getting the money to have an engine rebuild wouldn't be too big a problem. I'm just now all that knowledgeable about cars, I read that "buying a used rx-7" guide and most of it is greek to me.

a new/rebuilt engine is going to cost more than the car even at 950 for it...

If you want a car that wont be a hassle, dont get an rx7, even more so if you dont know anything about cars. You'll probably have a hard time finding people to work on it also. And its not cheap on gas either.

I'm just looking for a stable car that I can put a few bucks in that I don't have to make payments while I fix the damage on my current car and sell that one.

This aint an ordinary japanese car. Unless the shops have experience with rotary motors, don't let them touch your car. Probably not the car for you.

I don't disagree with the guys above, but I have spent very little money in maintenance. I drive my car pretty gently, but my friends abuse it a lot. The only problems that I have had were either due to poor sensor and timing adjustments on the part of the previous owner (resulting in low power but no reliability issues.) Or simple to repair (like a coolant hose to the throttle body.) Not counting Oil, gas and the ever vanishing tires, I spent about $150 in the last year.

Oh yeah, if you smell gas, check your pulsation damper for leaks (I had a little additional maintenance due to this problem a while back.)

As far as tolerance for beating, these cars will take it like nothing else that I have seen. Mine spent 5 minutes at the rev-limiter while a friend was spinning donuts and the only result was red-hot exhaust (all the way to the mufflers.) (I guess that the rear bumper got a little melted too.)

The car's future depends on it's past. If the car was neglected (which it looks like it might have if the muffler has mysteriously vaporized) then it may be close to it's death bed/plastic surgery clinic.

I didn't spend very much on my car when it was N/A and my DD, and I bought it with 121,000 miles on the clock. Luckily the car was maintained well mechanically and it ran right until I pulled the motor out to stick in a turbo II.

Some shops won't even work on rotaries, so you'll have to check beforehand. For some reason people are terrified of triangles spinning around, and for no real reason at all.

Check the FAQ for a link to a guide to buying an Rx-7 and it will basically give you a crash-course in what to look for in an Rx-7 as well as any other passenger car.
