metal intake tube?

Has anyone made a metal intake tube to replace the stock rubber piece from the AFM to the TB? I found some pre-bent mandrel at the shop that was just ordered so we can fabricate some pipes for a couple of WRX turbo kits/downpipes. The biggest size we have is 2.5 and I was wondering if that size would hurt power at all since it seems a bit smaller than the diameter of the rubber hoses from mazda. The smaller size would help velocity of air in the intake and maybe could make pulses stronger but would it restrick flow that much if at all? I didn't measure the stock hose at all since I just thought of this but it looks to be around 3 inches. the other thing I thought of is making a flange with an elbow to replace the one piece that connects to the TB for a full metal intake tube kit (and I'd need to weld a bung for the vacuum hose but thats easy enough). I really want to make this to make the engine look a little nicer and give me somethin fun to do but I don't want to spend all that time cutting and welding pipes if the size will hurt power. I could always get 3 inch pipes I'm sure but I'd rather use what we have so far...any ideas or thoughts? I'd want to paint the tube a kind of flat gray color afterwards because I just don't like the way polished tubes look. food for thought...anyone else tried with success?

Here is the thread on Vosko's TID made from a Honda cold air piece, rather nice: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...&highlight=ito
