Question Melting Rear Bumper Problem.

I have an 86 N/A and the two exhaust tips fell off. I had no money so I lived without them for abut a week. That was a bad idea. It melted the rear bumper pretty bad. Since the exhaust was already rusted to crap I put in A'pex Dual N1 Exhaust system. I understand some of you guys don't like it and I understand, but I need some help. After the install I noticed that the exhaust is still melting the bumper because the tips are to close to the bumper. Is there and aftermarket bumper that is available that will increase the distance between the tip and the bumper? Or do I have to make one? All help is appreciated.

Hah, at first when I saw the thread title I thought you were shooting flames and melting your bumper. Not sure about an aftermarket bumper but is there anyway you can fabricate a heat shield instead? Would be a hell of alot easier than making your own bumper.

Buy different size doughnuts, hangers, and try to lower the exhaust system. Hopefully the system will have enough play to move it away from the bumper.
Try and remove hangers/doughnuts and see how far the system will come down before you purchase new items.

yeah, my Apex N1 single use to touch my bumper. Then it melted the bumper enough so that it doesn't touch. I got rear ended, and while the rest of the car is okay, the bumper cover is already screwed.

Ouch. I ahve seen guys in option magazines get pieces of stainless steel or carbon fiber and riveting a little piece over each exhaust cut out. Looks cool and saves your bumper. Oh, BTW....the N1 Duals are my favorite looking!!

Well, I would not reccomend aluminum. It could scratch or tarnish. Stainless stell would be super nice, and would look great. If you do use aluminum, make sure whatever you use to fasten it is also made of aluminum and NOT steel. When stell and aluminum are in contact for any span of time will cause a chemical reaction that will cause the aluminum to deteriorate!

Thanks for the input guys. I think I will try a stainless steel heat sheild. BTW I am getting the body work done on the car and they said if they put a stock bumper on again it would just melt. Hopefully a heat shield would work. Thanks again.

Before I attempt this heat shield I was thinking. Won't the shield heat up and transfer heat to the bumper?

Does anyone know if the heat shield will heat up? I figured that the heat shield will just absorb the heat and then transfer it to the bumper?

Yes, it'll heat up, but it'll reflect enough away that you won't melt the bumper, especially if you trim enough of the bumper away.
