Mazda Stock Aero package

Does anyone have this on their car? I love the side skirts and rear spoiler seem to be part of rear hatch(could be wrong).

Holy **** that looks nice! I like the front bumper assembly, seems nice and flat, i hate the pointiness of the regular front bumper. That spoiler isnt part of the hatch, it bolts in right afterward, kinda sucks trying to get the hatch open with old hatch shocks.

I love the package except for the aero KILLING louvers on the hatch! Everything else is near perfect (if the bumper were a few mm's higher in the center it would be nearly aerodynamically PERFECT!). Either way it's incredible design for '86!!! It works and makes the car look good as opposed to a body kit which although looks better in some cases but hurts aerodynamically. Oh yea the mirrors are very efficient either. I'm glad you posted that pic though because I'm still studying aerodynamics and how they concern automobiles.

I like the louvers(I think it was just an option and not actually part of aero package, I don't think that spoiler will fit if you had louvers) myself, lot of cars in 70's and 80's had them I think it looks aggressive. I think drag coefficient for base rx-7 s4 was .3 or .29 which is still impressive even to today's standards, I wonder how much more improvement it has over those numbers with the aero kit,

The Cd of the S4 car is .31 with the 185/70 14 inch wheels. With the aero package (what you see here) it improved to .29. In comparison the 911 GT2 has a Cd of .34, the 911 Turbo is .31, and finally the RX8 has a Cd of .30.

Maybe an even greater shock...an F1 car has an average Cd of .75 (a flat plate is Cd=1.0). But they have so much downforce and horsepower that it doesn't really matter anyway, not to mention their frontal area is so freaking small.

Yeah Aaron Cake has the '86 sales brochure and it has a couple more pictures of the aero package.

http://www.aaroncake.net/RX-7/brochu....asp?Number=28

I think the only way you can get that is to cal Mazda and pay out the butt for it. I have yet to see any other site offer this kit, orginal or replica. It does look sweet though and i kind of wonder how many people got the aero package all the way back in '86.

Oh yea, the Honda Insight is Cd of .28 I do believe...or was it .21?

I'm telling you man...give me enough time and I'm GOING TO create an awesome ground effect (read:underbody design) for the S4 (don't have an S5...but it should work the same) using Venturi tunnels and a flat underbody. Even if the drag increases (which won't be as much as the downforce will) the car will STILL be on par with the aerodynamics of the 911GT2. All I need is time...

Man I hate louvers... they should only make them for 79 Trans Am's, and come with a ozzy soundtrack....
The kit is nice, but I don't mind the B package turbo one.. with the big front spoiler and side skirts, that's what I managed to piece together and slap on my GXL... for less than 100 bucks!!! I love life.
I'll take some pics sometime.

Oh yea...I'm trying very hard to stay away from using a rear wing if possible. There's just something about the look of an FC w/out a rear wing.

I dunno, that's pretty 80's ghetto lookin'...

Those kits were just an add-on you could get at the dealer when you bought the car. They're rare as hell (glass sunroofs were also a dealer-installed option, and we know how common those are . I've seen that entire kit for sale by someone YEARS ago who actually had the whole thing brand new.

I've NEVER seen an RX-7 with that on it (thank god .

Anyhow, IMHO it's a pipe dream to try and find it.

I've seen the pieces on ebay a couple times. HARD to find. There is part of the side skirts on there right now. Do a search for RX7 and wade through all the crap.

Also remember reading somewhere that there is an underbody tray that extends from the stock front tray rearward past the motor. Helps slicken up the underside of the car. I'm wanting this piece in particular and if anyone has pics or such please post them.

Those actually aren't too uncommon. They're aluminum, and go under the oil pan. I probably have at least 2 in my garage (but they're all spoken for! )

No that aero kit shown in the add was not the stock one, and did not lower drag that much.

The stock aero kit that lowered drag to .29 was the one that came on the 86-87 Sport and without the low drag spoiler on the 88 GTU and 88T2.

As shown here on the red sport:

Notice the drag lowing inserts infront of the wheels and flat aerodynamic rear spoiler... not the drag inducing later wing design.

You can still by that stock kit, made by Vestatec in Germany, here in the states. Tell me if this is not the same kit!

http://www.classicgarage.com/vesstylforma.html

The description calims it was the OEM kit for Europe and it's not cheap plastic. Used to be ble to order the whole kit for like $400. Now I think you have to by seperately.
