Mazda RX7 Metering Oil Pump

I am putting an 89 engine in my 87 rx 7(turbo model), the new motor has an electronic pump on it. I've run into the problem of the electronic metering oil pump.

Is there any other way of making it work without having to change the cover?

Is it possible to wire the electronic pump to another power source?

If I have to change the ECU(which is supposed to regulate the pump), will I have to change the other wiring harness that runs in to it from the dash (the one that the instrument panel runs into), etc.? or will it work okay with the existing wiring harness that's on the 87 car already?
(i ask this because i know the 89 has a lot of different features that the 87 doesn't)

Would you mind answering all these questions?

Yes, block it off and run premix.

No, it's not a constant rate pump, unless you could wire in a linear RPM switch to adjust the stepping motor, but that's a bit extreme.

It'd probably be easier for you to just swap the covers. Unless you're up for premixing, it's about the only way.

I agree, it would be FAR easier just to swap front covers and use the mechanical pump.

Plus the electronic ones seem prone to failure.

I'll 3rd that. Mine went bad at about 60k miles and the dealer charged my extended warranty company about $1200 to replace it.

Swap the cover. Be sure to read the Mazdatrix FAQ for info on how not to kill your torrington bearings. If the engine is still out of the car, simply set it on the flywheel and you should be good.
