manual steering rack pwns

now i understand what ppl meant when they said juss go manual rack instead of power steering rack with no power.

u can totally tell the difference.

so to everyone that has a power steering rack wid no power, juss switch to manual.

It depends on which power rack you are depowering but Ive tried a manual rack but switched it back to the depowered rack. I guess its personal preference but if you depower the rack the RIGHT way as in the archives, IMO its the best way to go.

In my opinion, the manual rack REALLY sucks. i drove it for 1 year and sold it to switch to power. the ratio on the manual rack is soooooooooooo damn huge you have to turn the wheel forever to get it to do anything. taking really sharp turns is not easy or fun when you have to cross your arms over six times, i imagine it would really suck for autocross. it's alright for big high speed turns, but not better than PROPERLY depowered rack (not just unhooking the belt). but thats just me, if it works for you thats good, its all personal preference.

I really like my depowered rack, I don't think I'd like the manual one as much because of the slower ratio. In fact I've contemplated getting the fastest power rack and trying that depowered to see if It's better.

That's because you are a cheap bastard!

Manual rack - $100 tops (got mine in a trade)

Sell power rack + $60

Sell pump/lines/bracket + $60

That equals out to $120, so I got paid $20 to have superior control over my vehicle, a cleaner engine bay, and the all around simplicity of the design... Thanks for playing!

Seriously you guys are too much... Why own an RX-7 if you're gonna cheap out? What is $100 anyways to do something right the first time? Just buy a Honda or a Chevy Cavaleir, and link ebay in your favorites... Done deal...

funny story, the lock to lock turns for my ps saab (lighter than an rx-7) is actually greater than the lock-to-lock turns on the rx-7, which is stock without power steering

its not a matter of cheaping out, i just dont prefer the manual rack. I had one, i intentionally got rid of it. the ratio is ******* terrible. any serious sports car or race car will NEVER have a ratio that huge, its just stupid.

^ Exactly. I didn't want slower steering. It'd be bad for those fast slaloms in autocross. I might even go with the fastest rack there is later on.

DIY does not = cheaping out. I've built several parts for my car and they all work and look quite nice. In fact I get complimented on my home made headlight cover reasonably often.

I can't believe you guys are arguing over the difference between a 17.4:1 ratio (PS) versus a 20.3:1 (manual) ratio like there is any noticable difference. We're talking 3.1 turns lock to lock versus 3.5... less than 150 degrees.
When was the last time you said to yourself: Damn, the wheels turn so slow, I wish I had a faster steering ratio.
I have driven both and can tell you there's next to no difference, and anyone who claims there is just lying to themselves about their driving ability.

Give me a break. Next you'll all be mounting an external **** on your wheel a la John Deere so that you can turn the steering wheel as fast as you can spin your tires.

I just put a manual rack on my GXL.

I've had an rx7 with power steering for 18 months and hated it.
It always felt sloppy and occasionally would drop power or even fight back in parking lots when making sudden opposing turns.. nearly sending me into parked cars (at normal <10 mph speeds, I'm not talking about anything silly).

I've only had the manual rack on the car for a day, and driven about 100 miles with it, around town, highways, interstate roads, merge ramps, roundabouts, etc and I love it. I don't know what the complaints about having to turn the wheel more are, I didn't /notice/ any difference, and if the car is moving at all, it doesn't feel harder to turn than power steering did...

Maybe I've just been driving on a bad power steering pump?
